Episode Summary
Goodbyes at the duchess's estate, then a long ride home to a mansion that has been emptied out. A returning maid explains what she found, a spirit in the forbidden library refuses to explain anything at all, and a twelve-year-old hands over a handkerchief for luck. By nightfall they are in woods built to make travellers lose their way — and one of them wakes up somewhere else.

10 expressions |
- I fail to comprehend why I must apologize and to whom, I suppose.
- I fail to comprehend how that was approved.

- To the best of my knowledge, there are only two people in this world he trusts.

03
give ~ the benefit of the doubt
- So were we just giving him the benefit of the doubt about this Witch's Cult situation?
- I'll give her the benefit of the doubt this once.
doubt(疑い)の benefit(利益)を相手にやる、という裁判由来の言い方。

take a leave of absence
- I merely took a temporary leave of absence for some personal reasons.
- He took a leave of absence last spring.

05
There's no telling what ~ will do.
- There's no telling what Roswaal will do.
- There's no telling what the market will do tomorrow.
I don't know が知らないのに対し、There's no telling ~ は誰にも分からない——自分だけの問題にしていないのが違い。 There's no telling how long it'll take.
06
more to ~ than meets the eye
- It made me think there must be more to Mr. Natsuki than meets the eye.
- There's more to this contract than meets the eye.

- Guess you're pretty slow on the uptake, aren't you?
- Sorry, I'm slow on the uptake today.
not understand が不理解なのに対し、be slow on the uptake は理解の速度——いずれ分かる前提なのが違い。

🎯 Grammar Patterns
3 patterns
PATTERN 1
Now why do you, of all people, + 動詞の原形 ~?(よりにもよってなぜ君が〜)
Now why do you, of all people, possess one of those?!
Why do you have that? of all + 名詞はof all days(よりにもよって今日)、of all places(よりにもよってこんな場所で) とも使えます。
- Why did she, of all people, agree to it?(よりにもよってなぜ彼女が承知したんだ)
- It broke on Friday, of all days.(よりにもよって金曜に壊れた)
PATTERN 2
Equally as important is the name of somebody you must not forget as you travel there.
~ is also important が付け足しなのに対し、Equally as important is ~ は同格の宣言——先に「同じ重さだ」と告げているのが違い。
- Equally as important is the order you do them in.(同じくらい大事なのは、やる順番です)
- Equally as important is who signs it.(同じくらい大事なのは、誰が署名するかです)
PATTERN 3
Don't expect me to indulge you any further, I suppose!
- Don't expect me to cover for you again.(次もかばってもらえると思わないで)
- Don't expect me to remember every name.(全員の名前を覚えていると思わないでください)
🎯 Today's Phrase
Native daily-use phrase
★ TODAY'S PHRASE
wear one's ulterior motives on one's sleeve
- The way you wear your ulterior motives on your sleeve makes you all the more likeable.
- He wears his ulterior motives on his sleeve, which is oddly refreshing.
- She wears her heart on her sleeve.
元の形は wear one's heart on one's sleeveで、「感情を隠さない」。 紛らわしいのがhave an agenda。こちらは「思惑がある」で、隠しているほうに寄る——隠さず見せているのが wear one's motives on one's sleeve、伏せて進めるのが have an agenda と分けると混ざりません。
