A witch who has been dead for centuries pours tea and offers to answer anything; the boy turns her down and walks out, which is not what anyone does.

  • You've come here completely of your own accord.

know no bounds

  • But of course the price of knowing everything knows no bounds.
  • Her curiosity knows no bounds.

  • I don't have enough experience to get a read on you yet.

  • I'll make it a point to chat over tea with you some other time in the future.
  • I make it a point to reply within a day.

PATTERN 1

Did you not find it the least bit strange that ~?(少しも妙だとは思わなかったのですか)

Did you not find it the least bit strange, Miss Emilia, that all the people ended up remaining here?

Didn't you think it was strange? が素朴な確認なのに対し、Did you not ~?

PATTERN 2

The only one allowed to + 動詞の原形 is 人(〜できるのは〜だけだ)

Only you can ~ が能力の限定なのに対し、The only one allowed to ~ is

PATTERN 3

I realize this may sound like ~, but …(〜のように聞こえるかもしれませんが)

I realize this may sound like we only care about what benefits us, but I pray you'll be our friend.

Don't get me wrong, ~ が誤解の予防なのに対し、I realize this may sound like ~ は自覚の表明——そう聞こえることを認めたうえで続けるのが違い。

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

of one's own accord

見出しはof one's own accord / nothing more, nothing less / be beyond one's comprehension / be held under house arrest / be acquainted with ~ のように、どこまでが自分の意志かを言い分ける言い回しを中心に据えました。

Did you not find it the least bit strange that ~?(少しも妙だと思わなかったのですか)、The only one allowed to + 動詞の原形 is 人(〜できるのは〜だけだ)、I realize this may sound like ~, but …(〜のように聞こえるかもしれませんが)——突く・絞る・断る前に置く型が並んでいます。

get a read on ~ / make it a point to ~ / meet one's end
