Episode Summary
He passes the first trial and learns there are three. The girl who has to pass them comes back from hers in pieces. Between the two, a barrier that separates soul from body is explained over bad tea, and the man who set all of this up admits, calmly, that he stayed away on purpose — and calls the boy his partner in crime for understanding why he cannot say a word about it.

🔥 Must-Know Expressions
10 expressions |
- That's only how it looks in hindsight!
- In hindsight, we should have asked earlier.
02
entertain the thought of ~
- Did you never once entertain the thought of your father being different?
- I did entertain the thought of moving.
entertain an idea / an offer
03
state with certainty that ~
- Can you state with certainty that you did not seek any of that?
- I can't state with certainty that it's safe.
- Emilia-sama escaped disaster by a hair's breadth.
- We made the connection by a hair's breadth.
by a hair と短くしても通じ、a close call(きわどいところ) が近い言い方です。
- What I mean to say is that we are partners in crime.
- The two of them are partners in crime in the kitchen.
06
express one's condolences
- I do express my condolences for all those on our side who were lost.
- Let me express my condolences to the family.
I'm sorry. My condolences.
07
put one's life on the line
- I trusted that you would put your life on the line to stop the attack.
- Nobody's asking you to put your life on the line.
risk one's life が危険にさらすのに対し、put one's life on the line は賭ける——自分から差し出しているのが違い。 put one's job on the line(職を賭ける) と中身は入れ替えられます。
08
That is the gist of it.
- Ah, you do catch on quickly. That is the gist of it, yes.
- That's the gist of it — the details can wait.
That's right. That is the gist of it. get the gist of ~(〜の要点をつかむ) の形も会議でよく使います。
- Ah, you do catch on quickly.
- She catches on quickly — one walkthrough was enough.
The name never caught on.(その名前は定着しなかった) と使い分けます。
- I will give my utmost to help Emilia-sama win the royal selection.
- We'll give our utmost on this one.
do one's best

🎯 Grammar Patterns
3 patterns
PATTERN 1
There is but one +
There is but one answer to all these questions.
There is only one ~ が数の限定なのに対し、There is but one ~ は改まった限定——格式が一段上がるのが違い。
- There is but one way in.(入口はただ一つです)
- There is but one condition.(条件はただ一つです)
PATTERN 2
it would not do to + 動詞の原形(〜するのは得策ではない)
It would not do to create friction between her and myself or the villagers.
We shouldn't ~ が助言なのに対し、it would not do to ~ は不都合の指摘——誰がまずいかを言わずに済ませているのが違い。
- It would not do to arrive empty-handed.(手ぶらで伺うわけにはいきません)
- It would not do to announce it today.(今日発表するのは得策ではありません)
PATTERN 3
Is it really even necessary to + 動詞の原形 ~?(そもそも〜する必要が本当にあるのか)
Is it really even necessary to overcome your past?
Do we have to ~? Is it really even necessary to ~?
- Is it really even necessary to meet in person?(そもそも直接会う必要が本当にありますか)
- Is it really even necessary to keep both?(そもそも両方残す必要があるのでしょうか)
🎯 Today's Phrase
Native daily-use phrase
★ TODAY'S PHRASE
in hindsight
- That's only how it looks in hindsight!
- In hindsight, we should have asked earlier.
- Hindsight is 20/20.
紛らわしいのがwith the benefit of hindsight。
