Episode Summary

He offers to take the trials in her place and gets refused by everyone, including her. So he rides back to the mansion two days early to catch a traitor — and finds he had the wrong suspect and the wrong danger. The maid he came to accuse turns out to be someone's sister; the one who is actually waiting for them is already inside; and the argument that follows is about who gets left behind.

🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions |

01

make no secret of the fact that ~

  • That Garfiel punk has made no secret of the fact that he hates my guts.
  • She made no secret of the fact that she wanted the role.

of のうしろは名詞か the fact that ~。

02

stand no chance against ~

  • I'm sorry to say this, but you stand no chance against her.
  • A small shop stands no chance against that pricing.

stand a chance(見込みがある)の否定形で、肯定では stand a good chance と形容詞を挟みます。

03

If I may be blunt, ~

  • If I may be blunt, I don't like this.
  • If I may be blunt, the schedule is unrealistic.

To be honest, ~ が率直さなのに対し、If I may be blunt, ~ は無遠慮さの予告——角が立つと分かって言うのが違い。

04

spell it out for ~

  • Then let me spell it out for you.
  • Do I have to spell it out for you?

05

draw the short straw

  • So you're deliberately choosing to draw the short straw again, I see.
  • I drew the short straw and got the night shift.

06

be up to no good

  • Those two are up to no good.

be suspicious が疑わしいのに対し、be up to no good は行動の断定——もう何かやっているのが違い。be up to ~ は「〜をやっている」。What are you up to?(何してるの) の up to と同じで、そこに no good を入れた形です。

07

dare defy ~

  • None of us dare defy him and endanger our position.
  • Nobody dares defy the schedule she sets.

08

a trade-off

  • There has to be a trade-off.
  • It's a trade-off between speed and accuracy.

between A and B

09

assume the task of -ing

  • Since it was my idea, I'll assume the task of stopping the enemy.
  • She assumed the task of briefing the client.

10

crystal clear

  • Your refusal to answer the question makes your betrayal crystal clear.
  • Let me make one thing crystal clear.

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

PATTERN 1

Well, it's less about ~ than …(〜というより、むしろ…

Well, it's less about what I saw than what I realized.

It's not ~. It's … It's less about ~ than … less about A than B で「A よりも B のこと」。

PATTERN 2

I'm prepared to + 動詞の原形 in ~'s place(〜の代わりに〜する覚悟がある)

I'm prepared to take on the other trials in your place and pass them for you.

I'll do it. in one's place

PATTERN 3

Needless to say, ~(言うまでもなく〜)

Very good. A passing grade, then. Needless to say, ~

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

draw the short straw

紛らわしいのがtake one for the team。
