Episode Summary

He passes the first trial and learns there are three. The girl who has to pass them comes back from hers in pieces. Between the two, a barrier that separates soul from body is explained over bad tea, and the man who set all of this up admits, calmly, that he stayed away on purpose — and calls the boy his partner in crime for understanding why he cannot say a word about it.

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

第30話の実際のセリフから、中級で押さえたい文法を3つ。

PATTERN 1

It might be possible to + 動詞の原形(〜できるかもしれない)

It might be possible to get everyone outside the barrier without doing the trial.

案を、可能性の形で置いてみる形です。We can ~ が断定なのに対し、It might be possible to ~ は提案——否定されても傷つかない置き方なのが違い。might と possible を重ねるので、押しがかなり弱くなります。会議で口を挟むときにちょうどいい強さです。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 2

Talk about ~!(〜もいいところだ)

Oath, my ass. Hah! Talk about a handy excuse.

目の前の例が極端だと、呆れて指す形です。That's convenient. が評価なのに対し、Talk about ~! は実例の提示——「これぞまさしく」と差し出しているのが違い。うしろは名詞のかたまりだけで、文にはしません。良い意味にも悪い意味にも使えます。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 3

There's no point in -ing if ~(〜なら、〜する意味がない)

But there's no point in freeing the Sanctuary if you're not the one to do it.

条件つきで、行為の値打ちを否定する形です。Don't do it. が制止なのに対し、There's no point in -ing if ~ は意味の否定——できるかどうかではなく、やる値打ちを問うているのが違い。in のうしろは -ing。There's no point in arguing.(言い争っても仕方ない) のように、if 以下を落としても使えます。

他にも使える例:

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

beat oneself up

紛らわしいのがbe hard on oneself。こちらは「自分に厳しい」で、性分のほうを指します——いま責めているのが beat oneself up、いつも厳しいのが be hard on oneself と分けると混ざりません。
