Episode Summary

Saved by someone who says she only acts on what a book tells her, he asks the one question she has no page for: then why are you talking to me? Back at the Sanctuary he finally gets a straight answer about why one person can walk in and out of these woods — and about what fraction of blood the barrier actually measures. Knowing it changes nothing, and someone decides he has learned too much.

意味話をはぐらかす

  • I racked my brain for a better title.

💡 脳を拷問台にかけて絞り出す——という形です。think hard が努力なのに対し、rack one's brain は苦しさ込み——思い出せない・出てこない苦痛が違い。rack は中世の拷問具で、体を引き伸ばす台。brain は単数でも brains でも使われます。

  • You took the words right out of my mouth.

💡 言おうとしていた言葉を先に取られる——という形です。I agree. が同意なのに対し、take the words out of one's mouth は一致の驚き——同じことを考えていたのが違い。right を挟んで強めるのが定番——You took the words right out of my mouth.会議で相づちを打つときにそのまま使えます。

04

be obstinate about -ing

意味〜することに頑なだ

  • But why are you so obstinate about avoiding the trial?
  • He's obstinate about doing it by hand.

💡 頑として動かないという形です。be stubborn が強情なのに対し、obstinate は理屈が通じない硬さ——説得を受けつけないのが違い。stubborn よりも硬く、否定的。about のうしろは名詞か -ing です。

05

think rationally about ~

意味〜を理性的に考える

  • That proves I can still think rationally about things.
  • Let's think rationally about the cost.

💡 感情を外して、筋道で考える形です。think carefully が慎重さなのに対し、think rationally は理性の側に立つこと——感情があると認めたうえで外しているのが違い。rational は「理にかなった」。calm(落ち着いて見える)とは別物で、この回ではその違いが話の焦点になります。

09

at will

意味自由に、思いのままに

  • Therefore, she can enter and leave the forest at will.
  • Members can join and leave at will.

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

第32話の実際のセリフから、書き言葉でも通用する上級構文を3つ。

PATTERN 1

Are you saying you can't + 動詞の原形 ~?(〜できないということですか)

Are you saying you can't do anything that's not written in that book?!

相手の言い分を、極端な形にまとめ直して突き返す形です。Can't you ~? が能力の質問なのに対し、Are you saying you can't ~? は要約の確認——本人が認めるかどうかを迫っているのが違い。Are you saying that ~? は登録ずみの型ですが、ここでは you can't を挟んで「不能の自認」を取りにいきます。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 2

What Young Gar is trying to say is that ~(〜が言いたいのは要するに〜だ)

What Young Gar is trying to say is that there is no convenient path by which to escape.

誰かの言い分を、第三者が引き取って整える形です。He means ~ が言い換えなのに対し、What 人 is trying to say is that ~ は代弁——本人がうまく言えていないと認めているのが違い。What で始まる主語のかたまりが要点。会議で話が噛み合わないとき、間に入る一言としてそのまま使えます。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 3

There is no ~ by which to + 動詞の原形(〜するための〜など無い)

There is no convenient path by which to escape.

手段そのものの不在を、格式ばって述べる形です。There's no way to ~ が平叙なのに対し、by which to ~ を使うと文語——硬さが一段上がるのが違い。前置詞 + which + to 不定詞という並びで、a tool with which to open it(開けるための道具) のように前置詞を入れ替えて応用できます。

他にも使える例:

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

take the words out of one's mouth

⭐ 「話がややこしくなった、と思っているでしょう」と当てられたリューズの返しです。こちらが言おうとしていた言葉を、先に口から取られる——という形です。I agree. が「賛成です」と立場を言うのに対し、take the words out of one's mouth は一致そのものへの驚き——同じことを、同じ瞬間に考えていたところが違います。だから、相手が先に言ったときにしか使えません。自分が先に言ってしまったら、この形は使えない——ここを間違える人がとても多い表現です。強めるときは right を挟みます——You took the words right out of my mouth.(まさにそれを言おうとしてたところです)会議で誰かが自分の懸念を先に言ってくれたとき、これ以上ない相づちになります。紛らわしいのがput words in someone's mouth。こちらは「言ってもいないことを言ったことにする」——先に言われたのが take the words out of one's mouth、言っていないことにされたのが put words in one's mouth と、方向が正反対です。
