Episode Summary

Saved by someone who says she only acts on what a book tells her, he asks the one question she has no page for: then why are you talking to me? Back at the Sanctuary he finally gets a straight answer about why one person can walk in and out of these woods — and about what fraction of blood the barrier actually measures. Knowing it changes nothing, and someone decides he has learned too much.

Got a sec? / look off / be on the lookout for ~ といった実際に作中で使われている表現に、rewritten / dork / weirdo / calmness / prioritize のような語彙を合わせました。

🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions |

01

Got a sec?

  • Yo, got a sec?
  • Got a sec? It'll take two minutes.

Do you have time? Have you got a second?

02

Save it for tomorrow.

  • C'mon, Otto. Save it for tomorrow, okay?
  • Save it for tomorrow — I'm done for today.

Let's talk later. Save it.

03

It couldn't hurt to ask.

  • I just thought it couldn't hurt to ask.
  • It couldn't hurt to ask — the worst they say is no.

Let me ask. It couldn't hurt to ask.

04

goof off

  • And when we goofed off, yelled at each other, acted like dorks together--
  • We goofed off all afternoon.

05

What a shame.

  • What a shame.
  • Sold out already? What a shame.

That's too bad. が同情なのに対し、What a shame.

06

look off

  • Does anything look off to you?
  • The colour looks a bit off.

07

behave oneself

  • Right now, I need you to keep quiet and behave yourself.
  • Behave yourself while I'm out.

08

try anything funny

  • Don't try anything funny!
  • If he tries anything funny, call me.

Something funny is going on.(何か妙だ) も同じ顔の funny です。

09

be on the lookout for ~

  • Be on the lookout for anything unusual.
  • I'm on the lookout for a secondhand one.

look for ~ が探索なのに対し、be on the lookout for ~ は待ち構え——いつ現れるか分からないのが違い。

10

a smooth talker

  • What a smooth talker you are.
  • Careful — he's a smooth talker.

be good at talking が技能なのに対し、a smooth talker は人物評——うまさに警戒が混ざるのが違い。

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

PATTERN 1

You're not one to + 動詞の原形(君は〜するような人じゃない)

You're not one to fall into patterns easily, huh?

You're not one to ~ は人物像——そういう種類の人ではないと言っているのが違い。

PATTERN 2

Knowing ~ will give us more options(〜

Knowing why will give us more options.

I want to know why. Knowing why will give us more options

PATTERN 3

I'll be counting on you to + 動詞の原形(〜のほうは頼みます)

I'll be counting on you to deal with the margrave tomorrow.

Please do it. I'll be counting on you to ~ は期待の表明——断られない前提で置いているのが違い。

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

pull ~ off

pull it off とは言えますが、pull off it とは言いません。名詞が長いときは後ろに回せます——She pulled off the whole event by herself.(彼女はあのイベントを一人でやり切った)服装にも使えます——Not everyone can pull off that hat.(あの帽子を着こなせる人はそういない)紛らわしいのがget away with ~。

Got a sec? / Save it for tomorrow. / look off / behave oneself / be on the lookout for ~ のように、話を始めて、切って、また戻す言い回しを中心に据えました。

You're not one to + 動詞の原形(君は〜するような人じゃない)、It couldn't hurt to + 動詞の原形(〜してみても損はない)、I'll be counting on you to + 動詞の原形(〜のほうは頼みます)——言い当てる・そっと出す・預ける型が並んでいます。

goof off / try anything funny / a smooth talker
