Episode Summary

He finally gets straight answers out of the margrave — about the book in the library, about the words that will turn its owner into an ally — and a promise that the man is not his enemy. Then the escape he had been saving goes wrong in front of the people who covered for him, and he ends up back at a tea party he did not expect to see twice, saying out loud the one thing he has never told anyone.

これは 上級レベル版。第33話は、ロズワールとの問答、そしてエキドナとの二度目の茶会が英語の見どころです。join forces with ~ / come at a price / fend for oneself といった実際に作中で使われている表現に、dearly / defective / override / omniscience / affirmatively のような語彙を合わせました。もう一方のレベルは〈中級〉版でどうぞ。

🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions | 各解説つき

〈上級〉第33話のロズワールとの問答、そしてエキドナとの二度目の茶会から、約束を取りつける言い回しを10個。すべて作中で実際に話されている英語です。

01

in one's possession

意味〜の手元にある

  • Something that resembles a Gospel rather closely is indeed in her possession.
  • The original is still in our possession.

💡 その人の所有のうちにあるという形です。have ~ が所持なのに対し、in one's possession は状態の記述——誰のものかを外から言っているのが違い。possession は「所有」で、法律・報道の文でよく出ます。come into one's possession なら「手に入る」。

02

join forces with ~

意味〜と手を組む

  • Once you've joined forces with Beatrice, she'll be a great help.
  • The two shops joined forces for the winter.

💡 戦力を一つに合わせる——という形です。work with ~ が協働なのに対し、join forces with ~ は合流——別々に持っていた力を束ねるのが違い。forces は必ず複数形。もとは軍隊の語ですが、いまは企業や団体の提携でよく使われます。

03

be powerless to + 動詞の原形

意味〜する力がない

  • It's there in the contract that she holds so dearly and is powerless to override.
  • We were powerless to stop it.

💡 力が無いので、どうにもできないという形です。can't ~ が不可能なのに対し、be powerless to ~ は無力さの表明——本人の意志とは別に不可能なのが違い。powerless は「力を奪われた」。状況に押し流される場面を描くとき、硬さがちょうどよく効きます。

04

come at a price

意味代償を伴う

  • And if that comes at a price, fine. I'll pay whatever you want.
  • That kind of speed comes at a price.

💡 値札がついてくる——という形です。be costly が高くつくのに対し、come at a price は必ず対価があること——金額とはかぎらないのが違い。自由・便利さ・速さなど、目に見えないものにこそ使います。at a high price と形容詞を挟めます。

05

fend for oneself

意味自力でしのぐ

  • We can't just leave Frederica there to fend for herself.
  • The cat has been fending for itself all winter.

💡 誰の助けも無しに、自分の身を守る形です。take care of oneself が自己管理なのに対し、fend for oneself は放り出された状態——助けが無いことが前提なのが違い。fend は defend の頭が取れた語。leave 人 to fend for themselves の形で「見捨てる」を表せます。

06

The pieces fit together.

意味話のつじつまが合う

  • Quite a few. I think all the pieces fit together now.
  • Once she said that, the pieces fit together.

💡 断片が組み合わさって一枚になる——という形です。I understand. が理解なのに対し、The pieces fit together. は全体像の完成——ばらばらだったものが繋がったのが違い。ジグソーパズルのたとえ。The pieces don't fit. と否定にすれば「どうも腑に落ちない」になります。

07

offer a helping hand

意味手を差し伸べる

  • Thus, I feel I should offer you a helping hand.
  • A neighbour offered a helping hand that week.

💡 助けの手そのものを差し出す形です。help ~ が援助なのに対し、offer a helping hand は申し出の段階——受けるかどうかは相手次第なのが違い。lend a hand(手を貸す) は実際に手伝うほう。差し出すのか、もう動いているのかで使い分けます。

08

take true resolve to + 動詞の原形

意味口にするには覚悟が要る

  • Those are strong words, words that took true resolve to say.
  • It took real resolve to send that email.

💡 実行するのに覚悟という材料が要るという形です。be brave が性質なのに対し、take resolve to ~ は必要量の話——どれだけの覚悟が要ったかを測っているのが違い。この take は「必要とする」。It takes courage to ~ と同じ作りで、resolve は名詞のとき「決意」です。

09

be thrown by ~

意味〜に動じる

  • It means you're not thrown by any of this.
  • Don't be thrown by the first question.

💡 投げ飛ばされて体勢を崩す——という形です。be surprised が驚きなのに対し、be thrown by ~ は平衡の喪失——反応できなくなっているのが違い。否定で使うことが多く、not thrown by ~ は「びくともしない」。throw 人 off もほぼ同じ意味です。

10

have a direct impact on ~

意味〜に直接効く

  • The contents therein had a direct impact on your Sloth Witch Factor.
  • The change had a direct impact on delivery times.

💡 間に何も挟まずに作用するという形です。affect ~ が影響なのに対し、have a direct impact on ~ は経路の指定——回り道していないのが違い。direct の反対は indirect。報告書で因果を書き分けるとき、この二語で強さを調整できます。

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

第33話の実際のセリフから、書き言葉でも通用する上級構文を3つ。

PATTERN 1

What makes you suspect (that) ~?(どうして〜だと疑うのですか)

Now, now. What makes you suspect she would be involved in such a thing?

理由を、原因の側から尋ねる形です。Why do you think ~? が理由の質問なのに対し、What makes you ~? はきっかけの質問——何がそう思わせたのかを聞いているのが違い。make 人 + 動詞の原形で「人に〜させる」。相手を責めずに根拠を出させたいときに効きます。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 2

As far as I know, this is something only 人 would be able to ~(私の知るかぎり、これは〜にしか〜できない)

As far as I know, this is something only you would be able to tell me.

相手にしか頼めないと、範囲で示す形です。Only you can ~ が断定なのに対し、As far as I know を足すと保険つき——自分の知識の範囲だと断っているのが違い。would be able to と仮定法にすることで、押しつけがさらに弱まります。頼みごとの前置きとしてそのまま使えます。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 3

It would have been better if ~(〜でなければよかったのに)

It would have been better if this wasn't necessary!

済んだことを、別のあり方と比べて悔やむ形です。I'm sorry. が謝罪なのに対し、It would have been better if ~ は後悔——選ばなかった道のほうを見ているのが違い。would have + 過去分詞が実際には起きなかったことを示します。if 以下は過去形で書くのが型です。

他にも使える例:

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

fend for oneself

⭐ 屋敷にひとり残したフレデリカを思って、昴が口にした一言です。誰の助けも無しに、自分の身を自分で守る——という形です。take care of oneself が「自分のことは自分でする」と自立を言うのに対し、fend for oneself は放り出された状態のほうを言う——助けが無いことが前提になっているところが違います。fend は defend(守る)の頭が落ちた語。だから「守る」の気配がそのまま残っていて、余裕のある自立ではなく、しのいでいる感じが出ます。いちばんよく出る形がこれです——leave 人 to fend for themselves(〜を見捨てて放り出す)人にも動物にも使えます——The cat has been fending for itself all winter.(あの猫はこの冬ずっと自力で生きている)紛らわしいのがbe on one's own。こちらは「一人でいる」で、良し悪しを含みません——助けが無くて苦しいのが fend for oneself、ただ一人なのが be on one's own と分けると混ざりません。
