Episode Summary

He finally gets straight answers out of the margrave — about the book in the library, about the words that will turn its owner into an ally — and a promise that the man is not his enemy. Then the escape he had been saving goes wrong in front of the people who covered for him, and he ends up back at a tea party he did not expect to see twice, saying out loud the one thing he has never told anyone.

🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions |

01

I'm all ears.

  • Now I'm all ears and ready to accept your words of gratitude.
  • Go on, I'm all ears.

I'm listening. が姿勢なのに対し、I'm all ears.

02

put ~ on hold

  • I've put the idea of running away on hold for the moment.
  • We put the hiring on hold.

03

a golden opportunity

  • But I've got a golden opportunity right now.
  • This is a golden opportunity to ask.

04

The last thing I want to do is ~

  • The last thing I wanna do now is stand here and play these annoying little games.
  • The last thing I want to do is repeat myself.

I don't want to ~ が拒否なのに対し、The last thing I want to do is ~ は最下位の指定——順位で強調しているのが違い。

05

keep one's mouth shut

  • You keep your mouth shut!
  • He kept his mouth shut about the whole thing.

06

buy enough time for ~ to + 動詞の原形

  • We can buy enough time for you to escape, no problem!
  • That'll buy enough time for the team to finish.

07

take up space

  • Even if the two of you only amount to half a man, you each take up a whole man's space.
  • Those boxes take up too much space.

take up too much of your time(お時間を取らせすぎる) も同じ形です。

08

if you know what's good for you

  • If you know what's good for you, you'll stay away from Subaru.
  • You'll sign it, if you know what's good for you.

You should ~ が助言なのに対し、if you know what's good for you は脅し混じり——従わない場合をほのめかしているのが違い。

09

Why wouldn't you?

  • If you can let me go without any trouble, why wouldn't you?!
  • It's free and it's faster — why wouldn't you?

You should.

10

Sure you don't mind?

  • Sure you don't mind?
  • Sure you don't mind waiting?

Is that okay?

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

PATTERN 1

Well, since I'm here, why not let me in on it?

Let me join. Why don't you ~?

PATTERN 2

So where do you think you're heading off to?(どこへ行くつもりだ)

So where do ya think you're headin' off to? Well, speak up!

Where are you going? Where do you think you're going? Who do you think you are?(何様のつもりだ) も同じ仕組みです。

PATTERN 3

It's best for everyone.(そのほうがみんなのためだ)

He'll only cause you trouble if he stays here, so it's best for everyone.

I want this. It's best for everyone.

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

I'm all ears.

I'm listening. He was all smiles.(彼はにこにこしっぱなしだった)、She was all business.(彼女は仕事一色だった) も同じ作りです。

I'm all ears. / put ~ on hold / a golden opportunity / buy enough time for ~ to + 動詞の原形 / Sure you don't mind?
