Episode Summary

The witch explains what his power is for, and what it will never do: it keeps him alive, and counts nobody else. Then he asks to meet the one who built the thing that is eating the Sanctuary, and gets three witches instead of one — a child who measures sin by pain, a furious healer who shouts while she mends him, and finally the one with the answer he came for, delivered as if it were obvious.

🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions | 各解説つき

〈中級〉第34話のミネルヴァの啖呵、エキドナとの軽口、そして目が覚めてからの場面から、そのまま使える言い方を10個。すべて作中で実際に話されている英語です。

01

I take it (that) ~

意味〜ということですね

  • I mean, I take it you're also a witch, right?
  • I take it you've already read the draft.

💡 そう受け取っておく、と先に言う形です。Are you ~? が質問なのに対し、I take it ~ は推定の確認——もう八割そう決めているのが違い。この take は「受け取る」。返事が要らない場面でも使えるので、メールの前置きにも向きます。

02

bounce back

意味立ち直る

  • You certainly bounced back with a surprising amount of ease.
  • She bounced back faster than anyone expected.

💡 床に当たって、また跳ね返る——という形です。recover が回復なのに対し、bounce back は速さ込み——落ちたぶんだけ勢いよく戻るのが違い。人にも、売上にも、体調にも使えます。bounce back from ~ と続ければ何から立ち直ったかまで言えます。

03

run wild

意味暴れ回る

  • They've run wild for over 400 years, and that's more than long enough.
  • The rumours ran wild for a week.

💡 手綱が外れたまま走る——という形です。be out of control が制御不能なのに対し、run wild は野放し——誰も止めていないのが違い。動物にも、噂にも、想像にも使えます——let one's imagination run wild(想像をふくらませる) はよい意味です。

04

come crying to ~

意味〜に泣きついてくる

  • You'd better not come crying to me like a grieving mother.
  • Don't come crying to me when it breaks.

💡 泣きながらこちらへ来る——という形です。ask for help が依頼なのに対し、come crying to ~ は突き放し——今さら頼るなと言っているのが違い。Don't come crying to me. の形で警告として使うのがほとんど。忠告を聞かない相手に投げる一言です。

05

go hungry

意味ひもじい思いをする

  • With those two around, people could eat and eat. No one would ever go hungry.
  • Nobody should go hungry in a city like this.

💡 空腹のままの状態が続くという形です。be hungry が状態なのに対し、go hungry は継続——食べられずにいるのが違い。この go は「〜の状態のままになる」。go unnoticed(気づかれずに終わる)、go unpaid(未払いのままになる) も同じ形です。

06

don't have a filter

意味思ったことをそのまま言う

  • Man, you don't have a filter at all, do you?
  • She doesn't have a filter, but she means well.

💡 口との間に濾過装置が無い——という形です。be honest が正直なのに対し、don't have a filter は無加工——思いつきがそのまま出るのが違い。filter は「濾過器」。半分あきれ、半分面白がっているときに言う、ごく新しい口語です。

07

It's almost like ~

意味まるで〜みたいだ

  • Man, seeing your face is such a relief. It's almost like being back home with family.
  • It's almost like nothing happened.

08

Why don't we make this quick?

意味手短にすませようか

  • Then why don't we make this quick?
  • Why don't we make this quick — you look tired.

💡 短く終わらせようと持ちかける形です。Let's hurry. が急かしなのに対し、make this quick は所要時間の合意——相手の都合を考えているのが違い。make it quick と命令形にすると「手短にしろ」ときつくなるので、Why don't we ~? を付けるのが安全です。

09

learn one's lesson

意味懲りる

  • If you've learned your lesson, then don't be careless!
  • I learned my lesson after the first time.

💡 その出来事から教訓を受け取る形です。regret ~ が後悔なのに対し、learn one's lesson は学習の完了——次は繰り返さないのが違い。lesson は「教訓」。teach 人 a lesson なら「思い知らせる」で、向きが逆になります。

10

I can't stand that ~

意味〜が我慢ならない

  • I can't stand that I'm letting you provoke me.
  • I can't stand that nobody said anything.

💡 その事実に耐えられないという形です。I don't like ~ が好みなのに対し、I can't stand that ~ は限界——耐えようとして無理だったのが違い。that のうしろは文。can't stand -ing なら「〜するのが我慢ならない」になります。

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

第34話の実際のセリフから、中級で押さえたい文法を3つ。

PATTERN 1

Why did you ~ in the first place?(そもそもどうして〜したんだ)

What's the point in unleashing monsters like that in the first place?

話を根元まで戻して問う形です。Why did you ~? が理由の質問なのに対し、in the first place を付けると起点の質問——そこから間違っていたのでは、と含むのが違い。文末に置くのが基本。What's the point in -ing ~?(〜する意味がどこにある) と組むと、いちばん強く響きます。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 2

If I told you I could ~, …(〜できると言ったら、どうします)

But what if I told you I could give you an opportunity to speak with Daphne?

まだ出していない提案を、仮の形で置く形です。I can do it. が申し出なのに対し、What if I told you ~? は反応を先に見る——まだ約束していないのが違い。told と過去形にするのが型で、仮定であることを示します。交渉の切り出しにそのまま使えます。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 3

Wouldn't you agree that ~?(〜だとは思いませんか)

Now, wouldn't you agree that everybody takes gluttony much too lightly?

同意を先に取りにいく形です。Do you think ~? が意見の質問なのに対し、Wouldn't you agree that ~? は同意の要求——反対されにくい形にしているのが違い。否定疑問にすることで、「そうですよね」に近づきます。丁寧なのに押しが強いので、議論で効きます。

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

bounce back

Sales bounced back in the spring.(売上は春に持ち直した)from を足せば、何から立ち直ったかまで言えます——She bounced back from a rough year.(彼女はつらい一年から立ち直った)紛らわしいのがget over ~。

You've gotta be kidding me. / break out of one's shell / run wild / don't have a filter / It's almost like ~ のように、驚いて、受け流して、言い返す言い回しを中心に据えました。語彙は token / predator / prey / appetite / cowardly のような魔獣の話の場面の語で揃えています。

この回でとくに効くのは、根元から問う英語です。Why did you ~ in the first place?(そもそもどうして〜したんだ)、What if I told you I could ~?(〜できると言ったら、どうします)、Wouldn't you agree that ~?(〜だとは思いませんか)——戻す・仮に置く・同意を取る型が並んでいます。

総合難易度:★★★☆☆(受け答えの英語が中心)/英語学習価値:★★★★★(驚きと呆れをそのまま言えます)/おすすめ度:★★★★★。come crying to ~ / learn one's lesson / go hungry まで扱う、リゼロ第34話「らぶらぶらぶらぶらぶらぶゆー」の中級版です。
