Episode Summary

The library turns out not to be safe after all, and neither does the village. By the end of the loop he is standing in front of the one person who will not pretend, and getting an answer — not the one he wanted, but a straight one, delivered politely, with a truce offered at the end of it.

feign ignorance / have grounds for -ing / a discrepancy

🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions |

01

feign ignorance

  • I suppose I could feign ignorance, but you clearly have some grounds for asking me about this.
  • He chose to feign ignorance rather than answer.

pretend not to know

02

have grounds for -ing

  • You clearly have some grounds for asking me about this.
  • They have grounds for refusing the request.

03

catch up to ~

  • The time will come when you truly catch up to me.
  • It took him a year to catch up to the others.

04

a discrepancy

  • If there's a discrepancy, then it must be corrected.
  • There was a discrepancy between the two reports.

05

call a truce

  • I'm calling a truce for now, because our focus should be on getting everybody outside.
  • Let's call a truce until the deadline passes.

06

the genuine article

  • It isn't a defective tome. It's the genuine article, of which only two exist.
  • I've seen copies, but this is the genuine article.

07

bring about ~

  • Your current self cannot bring about the future indicated in the text.
  • The new rule brought about a big change.

08

distance oneself from ~

  • You'd never distance yourself from her if she were to lean on you.
  • He tried to distance himself from the whole affair.

09

put the cart before the ground dragon

  • That would be putting the cart before the ground dragon.
  • Hiring before we have a plan is putting the cart before the horse.

10

blindly fly into a rage

  • You've always proven to be the type who would blindly fly into a rage.
  • He flew into a rage before hearing the reason.

get angry が状態なのに対し、fly into a rage は瞬間の爆発——突入する速さが違い。

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

PATTERN 1

Is it not because

Is it not because you sense that this is something you can undo?

Isn't it because ~? が口語なのに対し、Is it not because ~?

PATTERN 2

It would appear that ~(〜のようですね)

It would appear that our discussion is finished.

It seems that ~ が中立なのに対し、It would appear that ~ はいちだんと慎重——would が距離を取るのが違い。

PATTERN 3

As long as 主語 ~, it makes no difference(〜である限り、それはどうでもよい)

As long as he fulfills my goals one day, it makes no difference.

it makes no difference

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

feign ignorance

pretend not to know feign surprise(驚いたふりをする)、feign illness(病気を装う)のように、後ろに「装う中身」を置きます。
