Episode Summary

🔥 Must-Know Expressions
10 expressions | 各解説つき
〈上級〉第37話のエキドナとの契約交渉から、売り込む・値を下げる・念を押す言い回しを10個。すべて作中で実際に話されている英語です。
意味目的のための手段
- Because I felt it was the most effective means to an end, that's why.
- The job was only ever a means to an end.
💡 それ自体に価値は無く、目的に届くための道具——という形です。a method が方法なのに対し、a means to an end は割り切りの宣言——手段を選ばない含みが違い。means はこの形では単数扱いで、a means / this means と言えます。an end が「目的」という古い意味です。
意味〜を受け入れる覚悟をする
- I've resigned myself to accept your rage.
- She resigned herself to a long wait.
💡 抗うのをやめて、そうなるものとして受け取る形です。accept が受諾なのに対し、resign oneself to ~ はあきらめ込みの受容——望んでいない前提が違い。再帰代名詞が必ず入ります。to のあとは名詞か -ing で、be resigned to ~ なら今の状態です。
03
be of little consequence
意味たいしたことではない
- What they say is of little consequence.
- The delay was of little consequence in the end.
💡 重みが無いと切り捨てる形です。isn't important がふつうの否定なのに対し、be of little consequence は硬い言い方——落ち着いて格下げしているのが違い。of + 名詞で性質を言う型で、of no consequence なら「まったく問題にならない」になります。
意味〜は相手にしない
- I would pay no attention to their ramblings.
- Pay no attention to the noise outside.
💡 耳に入っても、取り上げない形です。ignore が無視なのに対し、pay no attention to ~ は値しないという判断——こちらが決めているのが違い。pay attention の否定形で、don't pay any attention to ~ とも言えます。助言の形で出ることが多い言い方です。
意味〜する気に傾く
- If it makes you lean toward agreeing to it at all, then so much the better.
- I'm leaning toward taking the offer.
💡 まだ決めていないが、片側へ寄っている形です。decide が決定なのに対し、lean toward ~ は傾き——まだ引き返せるのが違い。イギリス英語では towards。後ろは名詞でも -ing でも置けます。会議で立場をほのめかすのに便利です。
意味それならなおいい
- If it makes you lean toward agreeing at all, then so much the better.
- If we finish early, so much the better.
💡 条件が増えるほど好都合だ——という形です。that's good が評価なのに対し、so much the better は上乗せ——元々よしとしていたのが違い。the better の the は「その分だけ」を表す古い用法。文末に置くのが決まりで、all the better とも言います。
07
uphold one's end of the contract
意味契約の自分の側を果たす
- I'll uphold my end of the contract by lending you the wisdom you need.
- He upheld his end of the contract to the day.
💡 取り決めのうち、自分の担当ぶんを守る形です。keep a promise が約束なのに対し、uphold one's end of ~ は分担の明示——相手の側と分けて言うのが違い。end が「端」から「受け持ち」へ。契約以外にも使えて、one's end of the deal / of the bargain の形もよく出ます。
意味繰り返しになりますが
- To reiterate, as I make use of your power, I want you to use me also.
- To reiterate, nothing has been decided yet.
💡 言ったことを、形を整えてもう一度置く形です。Again, ~ が口語なのに対し、To reiterate, ~ は改まった言い方——会議や文書の側に寄るのが違い。re + iterate(繰り返す)で、意味が重なっている語。念を押す場面にいちばん向きます。
意味非の打ちどころがない
- My longing to help you is real and beyond reproach.
- Her conduct has been beyond reproach.
💡 責められる余地が無い——という形です。be perfect が完全さなのに対し、be beyond reproach は非難が届かない——批判を想定したうえで言うのが違い。reproach が「とがめ」。beyond が「〜の及ばないところに」。人の行いや動機について言います。
10
be a bit of an exaggeration
意味少し言いすぎである
- I think that calling it a bad thing is a bit of an exaggeration.
- Saying it failed is a bit of an exaggeration.
💡 その言い方は大きすぎる、と値を下げる形です。that's not true が否定なのに対し、be a bit of an exaggeration は部分否定——間違いではないと認めつつ直すのが違い。a bit of が効いていて、抜くと強い否定になります。自分の言いすぎを認めるのにも使えます。

🎯 Grammar Patterns
3 patterns
第37話の実際のセリフから、書き言葉でも通用する上級構文を3つ。
PATTERN 1
This wouldn't be ~, would it?(まさか〜ではないでしょうね)
This wouldn't be the promise you always precede with something like "in the end," would it?
これはまさか、いつも「最後には」と前置きする例の約束ではないでしょうね。
疑いを、やわらかい形にして当てる言い方です。Is this ~? が質問なのに対し、This wouldn't be ~, would it? は疑いの確認——違ってほしいと思っているのが違い。否定で始めて否定で締めるのが型で、would が推量をやわらげます。相手を詰めずに探るのに向きます。
他にも使える例:
- This wouldn't be the same invoice, would it?(まさか同じ請求書ではないでしょうね)
- This wouldn't be your idea, would it?(これはまさか、あなたの案ではないでしょうね)
PATTERN 2
Instead of -ing, you should try -ing(〜するより、〜してみては)
Instead of counting the people you may have failed to save, you should try focusing on those you have saved.
救えなかった人を数えるより、救えた人に目を向けてみては。
向け先を取り替えて勧める形です。Don't ~ が禁止なのに対し、Instead of -ing, you should try -ing は差し替えの提案——代わりの行いまで出しているのが違い。instead of のあとは必ず -ing。try -ing が「ためしに〜する」で、try to ~(〜しようと努める)とは別です。
他にも使える例:
- Instead of rewriting it, you should try cutting it.(書き直すより、削ってみては)
- Instead of waiting, you should try asking.(待つより、聞いてみては)
PATTERN 3
What exactly do you find so 形容詞 about ~?(〜のどこがそんなに〜なのですか)
So what exactly do you find so problematic about this?
これのどこが、そんなに問題だというのですか。
相手の評価の根拠を、一点に絞って出させる形です。Why don't you like it? が理由なのに対し、What exactly do you find so ~ about ...? は箇所の特定——どこが、と迫っているのが違い。find + 目的語 + 形容詞 の型を疑問にした形で、exactly が容赦を削ります。落ち着いた口調のまま攻められる言い方です。
他にも使える例:
- What exactly do you find so unfair about the rule?(その規則のどこが、そんなに不公平なのですか)
- What exactly do you find so funny about it?(それのどこが、そんなにおかしいのですか)
🎯 Today's Phrase
Native daily-use phrase
★ TODAY'S PHRASE
a means to an end
「目的のための手段」
- Because I felt it was the most effective means to an end, that's why.
- The job was only ever a means to an end.
- To him, every friendship was a means to an end.
⭐ なぜそんなやり方をしたのか問われたエキドナが、平然と返した一言です。それ自体に値打ちは無く、目的に届くための道具——という形です。a method が「やり方」を中立に言うのに対し、a means to an end は割り切りの宣言——手段そのものはどうでもよいと言っているところが違います。means の形に注意が要ります——s で終わっていますが、この形では単数扱いで、a means / this means / every means と言えます。an end は「終わり」ではなく「目的」。the end justifies the means(目的は手段を正当化する)と同じ end です。使いどころに特徴があります——人や関係について言うと、かなり冷たく響きます——To him, every friendship was a means to an end.(彼にとって友情はどれも、目的のための手段だった)紛らわしいのがa stepping stone。こちらは「次へ進むための足がかり」で、前向きな言い方——割り切りが a means to an end、踏み台として前向きなのが a stepping stone と分けると混ざりません。
