Episode Summary
He wakes up outside because something came and got him, and the reason it gave was none of his business. Then he walks into the one conversation where every answer he offers is graded and sent back, and comes out of it with nothing — until somebody tells him the first step is to breathe.

🔥 Must-Know Expressions
10 expressions | 各解説つき
〈上級〉第38話のロズワールとの問答から、詰める・ぼかす・線を引く言い回しを10個。すべて作中で実際に話されている英語です。
01
That is precisely what you are for.
意味そのためにあなたがいるのです
- I can't bear to watch Emilia keep going in there. — That is precisely what you are for.
- That is precisely what you are for, isn't it?
💡 役割をそこに固定してしまう言い方です。That's your job. が担当の指摘なのに対し、That is precisely what you are for. は存在の理由づけ——ほかに使い道は無い、と聞こえるのが違い。precisely が「まさしく」。what 人 is for が「その人がいる意味」で、道具について使う形を人に当てています。
意味〜について人に詰め寄る
- Let me press you on one more matter.
- The reporter pressed him on the timeline.
💡 一点に絞って、答えを出させる形です。ask が質問なのに対し、press 人 on ~ は逃げ道を塞ぐ——続けて迫るのが違い。on のあとが話題で、press 人 for ~ なら「〜を要求する」。取材や議会の報道でよく見ます。
03
be not limited to ~ alone
意味〜だけに収まらない
- Those problems are not limited to the Sanctuary alone.
- The damage was not limited to one floor alone.
💡 範囲をそこで切らせない形です。isn't only ~ が口語なのに対し、be not limited to ~ alone は硬い言い方——境界そのものを否定しているのが違い。alone が後ろに付いて念を押すのが型で、抜いても通じますが、重みが減ります。報告書でよく出る形です。
意味取り消す
- Once you make that choice, you can never take it back.
- I said it, and I won't take it back.
💡 口に出したものを引っこめる形です。change one's mind が考えの変更なのに対し、take it back は発言や決定の撤回——出したものを戻すのが違い。it は言葉でも選択でも置けます。Take it back! と命令形にすると「今言ったことを取り消せ」になります。
意味妨げになる
- To walk the path of isolation, the human heart is only a hindrance.
- The extra rule became a hindrance.
💡 進むのを遅らせる邪魔——という形です。a problem が問題なのに対し、a hindrance は進行の妨げ——目的が先にあるのが違い。hinder(妨げる)の名詞形で、more of a hindrance than a help の形が決まり文句のようによく出ます。
意味〜を省く、見送る
- To forego the graveyard seems awfully cowardly.
- They chose to forego the ceremony.
💡 できるのに、あえてやらない形です。skip が飛ばすのに対し、forego ~ は権利や機会を手放す——自分から放棄しているのが違い。forgo という綴りのほうが標準で、どちらも同じ意味。硬い文章で使う語です。
07
Do you have a reason for such haste?
意味そう急ぐ理由がおありですか
- But to forego the graveyard seems cowardly. Do you have a reason for such haste?
- Do you have a reason for such haste, or is it just nerves?
💡 急ぐ理由そのものを問う言い方です。Why the rush? が口語なのに対し、Do you have a reason for such haste? は改まった形——丁寧なぶん、逃げにくいのが違い。haste が「急ぎ」で、such が「そこまでの」。Haste makes waste.(急げば無駄が出る)の haste です。
意味まだ〜していない
- But you have yet to even stand at the starting line of your resolve.
- We have yet to hear back from them.
💡 これから起こるはずのことが、まだ起きていない形です。haven't ~ yet が口語なのに対し、have yet to ~ は硬い言い方——起きるべきだという含みが違い。to のあとは動詞の原形で、yet to be decided のような受け身の形もよく出ます。報告や通知で使う型です。
09
So long as there is ~, there is ...
意味〜がある限り、〜がある
- So long as there is life, there is a future. So long as there is hope, there is possibility.
- So long as there is demand, there is a business.
💡 条件を鎖のようにつないでいく形です。If there is ~ が単発の仮定なのに対し、So long as there is ~ は続く限りという持続——重ねて積み上げられるのが違い。As long as ~ と同じ意味で、So long as ~ のほうが格式が上。演説や宣言で使う型です。
意味〜に魅入られる
- Ever since the moment I was enchanted by those eyes, I have been insane.
- She was enchanted by the sound of it.
💡 魔法にかかったように心を奪われる形です。be impressed が感心なのに対し、be enchanted by ~ は抜け出せない引力——自分で選んでいないのが違い。enchant は「呪文をかける」から。be enchanted with ~ でも言えて、by は力の出どころ寄りです。

🎯 Grammar Patterns
3 patterns
第38話の実際のセリフから、書き言葉でも通用する上級構文を3つ。
PATTERN 1
It would seem (that) ~(〜のようですね)
It would seem you have quite the history with me.
わたしとはなかなかの付き合いがあるようですね。
見たところを、断定を避けて置く形です。It seems that ~ が中立なのに対し、It would seem (that) ~ はいちだんと慎重——would が距離を取るのが違い。that は落とせます。分かりきったことにこの形を使うと、わざとらしさが効きます——皮肉の定番です。
他にも使える例:
- It would seem we were both wrong.(どうやら二人とも間違っていたようですね)
- It would seem the deadline has moved.(締め切りが動いたようですね)
PATTERN 2
How many more times must you + 動詞の原形 ~?(あと何度〜すれば済むのですか)
How many more times must you disappoint me?
あと何度わたしを失望させれば済むのですか。
繰り返しに、終わりが見えないと投げる形です。Why do you keep -ing? が原因なのに対し、How many more times must you ~? は回数——これまでの分まで数えているのが違い。must が義務ではなく運命のような響きで、あきれと嘆きが混ざります。答えを求めていない問いです。
他にも使える例:
- How many more times must you ask?(あと何度聞けば済むのですか)
- How many more times must we go over this?(あと何度これをやり直すのですか)
PATTERN 3
even if it means -ing(たとえ〜することになっても)
I expect you to possess the will to carry out your objective, even if it means ignoring what others want.
たとえ他人の意思を無視することになっても、目的を遂げる意志を持ってほしいのです。
代償を先に言ってから、要求を通す形です。even if ~ が仮定の譲歩なのに対し、even if it means -ing は中身の明示——何を引き受けるのかまで言っているのが違い。mean -ing が「〜することになる」。mean to ~(〜するつもり)とは別なので、ここで to を使うと意味が変わります。
他にも使える例:
- I'll finish it, even if it means staying late.(遅くまで残ることになっても仕上げます)
- We'll ship on time, even if it means cutting features.(機能を削ることになっても期日に出します)
🎯 Today's Phrase
Native daily-use phrase
★ TODAY'S PHRASE
be a hindrance
「妨げになる」
- To walk the path of isolation, the human heart is only a hindrance.
- The extra rule became a hindrance.
- He was more of a hindrance than a help.
⭐ 人の心は邪魔だと言い切ったロズワールの一言です。進むのを遅らせる邪魔——という形です。a problem が「問題」とだけ言うのに対し、a hindrance は進行の妨げ——向かう先が先にあって、そこへの邪魔だというところが違います。hinder(妨げる)の名詞形で、数えられる名詞。a hindrance to ~ の形で何の妨げかを足せます——a hindrance to progress(進歩の妨げ)。いちばんよく見る形がこれです——more of a hindrance than a help(助けになるどころか足を引っぱっている)。人についても物についても使えます。紛らわしいのがan obstacle。こちらは「道をふさぐ障害物」で、外から立ちはだかるもの——遅らせるのが a hindrance、行き止まりにするのが an obstacle と分けると混ざりません。
