Episode Summary
Somebody finally makes him say the whole thing out loud, and once it is out he walks straight to the person holding every card and offers a bet instead of a plea. Then he spends the rest of the day asking questions he has been avoiding — of a 400-year-old copy, and of the girl he has never once asked.

- That one line sums it up perfectly.
sum up は分離する句動詞なので、代名詞は間に入ります——sums you up(sums up you は誤り)。

- I don't feel up to going out tonight.
want to ~ が意志なのに対し、feel up to -ing は体力と気力——無理をさせない含みが違い。up to のあとは名詞か -ing で、to + 動詞の原形にはしません。

🎯 Grammar Patterns
3 patterns
PATTERN 1
Would you mind -ing ~?(〜
And would you mind staying here until morning?
Can you ~? が依頼なのに対し、Would you mind -ing? 答え方に注意が要ります——Not at all.
- Would you mind closing the window?(窓を閉めていただけますか)
- Would you mind waiting a moment?(少しお待ちいただけますか)
PATTERN 2
There's no telling how ~(どれくらい〜か分からない)
There's no telling how long I would have stayed like that.
I don't know が自分の無知なのに対し、There's no telling ~ は誰にも分からない——一般の話にしているのが違い。no telling のあとは how / what / when など。
- There's no telling how long it'll take.(どれくらいかかるか分かりません)
- There's no telling what he'll say.(彼が何を言うか分かりません)
PATTERN 3
It doesn't make ~ any less

It's still good. It doesn't make ~ any less
- It doesn't make the win any less real.(それで勝ちが嘘になるわけじゃない)

🎯 Today's Phrase
Native daily-use phrase
★ TODAY'S PHRASE
feel up to -ing
- I want to know if you feel up to telling me exactly what it is you saw.
- I don't feel up to going out tonight.
- Do you feel up to a short walk?
Do you want to ~? up to のあとの形が要です——名詞か -ing を置き、to + 動詞の原形にはしません——Do you feel up to a short walk?(少し歩けそう)のように、名詞だけでも成り立ちます。 I don't feel up to going out tonight.(今夜は出かける気力がない)は、理由を言わずに断れる便利な形です。 紛らわしいのがbe up for ~。
