🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions | 各解説つき

〈中級〉第40話後半「信じる理由」の言い合いから、そのまま使える言い方を10個。すべて作中で実際に話されている英語です。

01

not faze ~

意味〜を動じさせない

  • You're this kind to me even when I mess up, because it doesn't faze you.
  • The noise didn't faze her at all.

💡 出来事が相手の調子を乱さない——という形です。not surprise が驚きなのに対し、not faze ~ は揺らぎ——平気でいられるのが違い。ほぼ否定文でしか使いません。faze と phase は発音が同じなので、綴りを間違えやすい語です。

02

break one's word

意味約束を破る

  • You and Puck, you broke your word and went away.
  • He's never once broken his word.

💡 口にした約束を、そのまま割る形です。lie が嘘なのに対し、break one's word は約束の不履行——言ったときは本気だったのが違い。word が無冠詞で「約束」。keep one's word なら「約束を守る」で、対になります。

03

over and done with

意味もう済んだこと

  • There's no need for you to keep moping about stuff that's over and done with.
  • It's over and done with. Let it go.

💡 終わって、片もついている——という形です。finished が完了なのに対し、over and done with は念押しの二重——もう持ち出すなという含みが違い。with まで付けるのが決まりで、落とすと締まりません。過去の話を切り上げるのに使います。

04

That couldn't be farther from the truth.

意味それはまったくの逆です

  • Emilia, wait a second. That couldn't be farther from the truth, I swear!
  • That couldn't be farther from the truth — ask anyone.

💡 誤解を、いちばん強い形で打ち消す言い方です。That's not true. がふつうの否定なのに対し、That couldn't be farther from the truth. は距離の最大——真実から最も遠いと言うのが違い。couldn't be + 比較級で「これ以上〜ではありえない」という最上の形。further でも同じです。

05

make one's heart race

意味胸を高鳴らせる

  • Just being with you makes my heart race.
  • That one email made my heart race.

💡 動悸として出るほどの高まり——という形です。be excited が感情なのに対し、make one's heart race は体の反応——抑えようがないのが違い。race が「駆ける」。恋にも緊張にも使えて、良い意味にも悪い意味にも振れます。

06

put others before oneself

意味人を自分より先に置く

  • It's hard to leave you alone when I see you putting others before yourself.
  • She always puts others before herself.

💡 順番として、人を先にする形です。be kind が優しさなのに対し、put others before oneself は順位づけ——自分を後ろに置いているのが違い。put A before B の型で、before が「〜より前に」。褒め言葉にも、心配の言葉にもなります。

07

know better than to expect ~

意味〜を期待するほど愚かではない

  • Are you not angry 'cause you knew better than to expect anything?
  • I know better than to expect a reply today.

💡 経験から、期待しないほうを選んでいる形です。don't expect が予測なのに対し、know better than to ~ は学んだ結果——以前は期待していたのが違い。than のあとは to + 動詞の原形。自分にも他人にも使えて、You should know better. なら「いい年をして」という叱り方になります。

08

come across as ~

意味〜のように受け取られる

  • Even though it might come across as a little selfish.
  • He comes across as cold, but he isn't.

💡 自分の意図とは別に、そう見える形です。seem が印象なのに対し、come across as ~ は相手側の受け取り——意図とずれている含みが違い。as のあとは形容詞でも名詞でも置けます。自分の言い方を先にことわるのに便利です。

09

can hardly stand it

意味こらえきれないほどだ

  • Even your height is something so perfect to me, I can hardly stand it.
  • It's so good I can hardly stand it.

💡 よすぎて、じっとしていられない——という形です。I love it. が好みなのに対し、can hardly stand it は限界——受け止めきれないのが違い。hardly が「ほとんど〜ない」。can't stand it なら「我慢できない」で嫌なほうに振れるので、hardly を入れると好ましい側に寄ります。

10

till one's last breath

意味息の続くかぎり

  • I'll love you 'til my last breath.
  • He kept writing till his last breath.

💡 終わりの日までずっと——という形です。forever が時間の長さなのに対し、till one's last breath は自分の一生——期限を自分に置いているのが違い。till は until のくだけた形で、'til とも綴ります。誓いの言葉によく使われます。

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

第40話の実際のセリフから、中級で押さえたい文法を3つ。

PATTERN 1

It's not because A that B. B because A.(Aだから Bなのではない。Bだから Aなのだ)

It's not because I believe in you that I love you. I believe in you because I love you!

原因と結果の向きを、言葉でひっくり返す形です。I love you because I believe in you. が素直な順なのに対し、It's not because A that B は順番の否定——先に来るものを入れ替えているのが違い。It's not because ~ that ... が強調構文の否定形で、that 以下が「本当に言いたいこと」。言い直しをひと続きで並べるのが、この形のいちばん効く使い方です。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 2

How am I supposed to + 動詞の原形 ~?(どうやって〜すればいいの)

You named all the things that make me worthless, and you still say you love me? How am I supposed to believe you?!

手立てが見えないと投げ返す形です。I can't believe you. が否定なのに対し、How am I supposed to ~? は方法を問う形——できないと言いながら、答えを求めているのが違い。be supposed to ~ が「〜することになっている」。怒りにも戸惑いにも振れるので、口調で意味が変わります。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 3

It's only natural that ~(〜なのは当たり前です)

With all those unfamiliar memories flooding your mind, it's only natural that you'd feel anxious and scared.

相手の反応を、正しいものとして認める形です。Don't worry が励ましなのに対し、It's only natural that ~ は承認——そう感じていいと言っているのが違い。only が「ごく」で、抜くと説明っぽくなります。that のあとは仮定法の would も置けて、やわらかくなります。

他にも使える例:

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

not faze ~
