The merchant buys time in the forest, and while he does it we learn why he spent his childhood pretending he could not hear anything. Elsewhere, a conversation that starts as a list of faults turns into the longest answer to the shortest question: why believe in someone at all?

  • This is all just a misunderstanding. I've gotta get to the bottom of this.
  • We need to get to the bottom of the error.

the bottom に the が必要。

04

in the name of ~

  • I wasn't actually asked to buy time this way, but it's all in the name of helping my friend!
  • They cut the budget in the name of efficiency.

05

be far from over

  • My personal battle might end here, but it's far from over.
  • The season is far from over.

isn't over が否定なのに対し、be far from over は距離の強調——終わりまでの隔たりを言うのが違い。far from + 形容詞の型で、far from perfect / far from simple のようにも使えます。

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

PATTERN 1

No matter where I went, I heard a barrage of endless voices.

No matter + where / what / how で広げられます。

PATTERN 2

It was 人 who ~(〜したのは、まさにその人だった)

人なら who、物なら that。時や場所も入れられます——It was then that ~(そのときだった)。

PATTERN 3

I knew, but ~ が順接なのに対し、Not that ~, but ... Not that I didn't know がそれ。

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

when all's said and done

in the end が「最後には」と時間の順を言うのに対し、when all's said and done は議論のあと——やりとりを踏まえているところが違います。all is の短縮が all's。all that is said and done 紛らわしいのがat the end of the day。こちらはほぼ同じ意味で、口語としてはもっと軽い——議論を踏まえるのが when all's said and done、気軽にまとめるのが at the end of the day と分けると混ざりません。
