The fight ends and the real argument starts: a boy who made himself into a wall has to be told, by his sister, what actually happened — and then has to decide what to do about it. Meanwhile everyone else is busy being rude to each other, which is how they say they are glad.

💡 飾らずに、そのまま言う形です。be honest が誠実さなのに対し、tell it like it is は遠慮の無さ——相手が傷つく可能性まで込みなのが違い。it が「実際のところ」。like は as のくだけた形で、文法より言い慣らされた形が勝っている言い方です。

意味恨みを抱えている

  • Garfiel, you have a grudge, and it's holding you back.
  • He held a grudge for years over nothing.

💡 過去の恨みを、そのまま持ち続ける形です。be angry が今の怒りなのに対し、hold a grudge は持ち越した恨み——時間が経っているのが違い。grudge は数えられる名詞で、hold / bear / nurse a grudge と組みます。against 人で相手を足せます。

意味数の力

  • Then discover what "strength in numbers" means.
  • There's strength in numbers, so bring the whole team.

💡 人数が集まること自体が力になる——という形です。teamwork が連携なのに対し、strength in numbers は数そのもの——ひとりでは届かないのが違い。無冠詞で使うのがふつうで、There's strength in numbers. の形が定番。この回の題名に当たる言い方です。

意味〜に重荷を負わせる

  • I know that doing so will impose such a burden on you.
  • The new rule imposes a burden on small shops.

💡 こちらの都合で、相手に重さを背負わせる形です。ask が依頼なのに対し、impose a burden on ~ は負担の押しつけ——断りにくい立場を含むのが違い。impose が「課す」。on のあとは人でも組織でも置けます。申し訳なさを先に述べるのに向きます。

意味不運に見舞われる

  • If Mother was unlucky enough to meet with misfortune after leaving here.
  • Should anyone meet with misfortune, tell me at once.

💡 悪いことに出会ってしまう——という形です。have bad luck が口語なのに対し、meet with misfortune は改まった言い方——はっきり言わずに済ませるのが違い。meet with ~ が「〜に遭う」で、meet with success / resistance のようにも使えます。言葉をやわらげたいときに選ばれる形です。

意味心を入れ替える

  • As long as I'm turning over a new leaf, there's something I ought to apologize for.
  • He's turning over a new leaf this year.

💡 ページをめくって、やり方を変える形です。change が変化なのに対し、turn over a new leaf は改心——前のやり方が悪かった前提が違い。leaf は「葉」ではなく本の1枚。語順は固定で、進行形でよく使います。

意味〜をぽんぽんと並べる

  • I rattled off a bunch of famous quotes when I was your age, too.
  • She rattled off every name without looking.

💡 よどみなく、次々に言う形です。list が列挙なのに対し、rattle off ~ は速さと軽さ——考えずに出てくるのが違い。rattle が「かたかた鳴る」。名前・数字・引用など、覚えているものを並べるときに使います。

not a shred of ~

意味〜がひとかけらも無い

  • Even after all this time, there isn't a shred of niceness in you, is there?
  • There isn't a shred of evidence for that.

💡 いちばん小さな単位すら無い——という形です。no ~ at all が全否定なのに対し、not a shred of ~ は最小単位での否定——強さがひと段上がるのが違い。shred が「細い切れ端」。evidence / doubt / decency など、数えられない名詞と組みます。

意味〜に屈する

  • I won't give in to the malevolence of a fellow witch.
  • Don't give in to the pressure.

💡 押されて、こちらが折れる形です。accept が受諾なのに対し、give in to ~ は抵抗のあとの降伏——踏みとどまっていたのが違い。give up が放棄なのに対し、give in は相手がいるのが違い。誘惑・圧力・要求と組みます。

意味片思いである/一方的である

  • If you thought your feelings were one-sided, you could justify the pain.
  • The whole conversation was one-sided.

💡 片側だけで成り立っている——という形です。unfair が不公平なのに対し、be one-sided は釣り合いの欠け——もう片方が応えていないのが違い。ハイフンつきの形容詞で、気持ち・会話・試合に使えます。a one-sided match なら「一方的な試合」。

PATTERN 1

Surely you must know why ~(なぜ〜か、お分かりでしょう)

Surely you must know why you weren't told about this at such a young age.

答えを相手の中に見ている、という前提で問う形です。Do you know why ~? が質問なのに対し、Surely you must know why ~ は確信つき——分かっているはずだと言っているのが違い。surely が「まさか分からないはずはない」で、must が話し手の推定。やわらかく、しかし逃げ場が無い言い方です。

PATTERN 2

speak as if ~(〜のような言い方をする)

You're speaking as if I don't already know.

相手の前提のほうを指して返す形です。You're wrong. が否定なのに対し、speak as if ~ は言い方への指摘——中身ではなく構えを突いているのが違い。as if のあとは現在形でも過去形でも置けます——過去形にすると、現実と違うことがはっきりします。落ち着いた反論に向きます。

A and B are two different things(AとBは別のことです)

I can admit that I lost, but admitting and surrendering are two different things.

混ぜられた二つを、切り離して示す形です。That's not the same. が否定なのに対し、A and B are two different things は並べての区別——どちらも名前を出して比べているのが違い。主語が二つなので動詞は are。-ing 形を二つ並べるのがいちばん決まり、議論で線を引くときの定番です。
