She walks back through her own childhood with the least sympathetic guide imaginable, and what she finds is mostly politeness: a guest who asks after a seal every single visit, an aunt who will not be called old, and a promise a small girl was asked to swear and did not keep.

🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions | 各解説つき

〈上級〉第42話のエキドナとの問答、そしてフォルトナとゲーゼのやりとりから、務めを述べる・礼を尽くす言い回しを10個。すべて作中で実際に話されている英語です。

01

remain intact

意味損なわれずに保たれている

  • I know that I ask this every time we meet, but does the seal remain intact?
  • The records remain intact after the move.

💡 手つかずのまま、元の形で残っている形です。be safe が無事なのに対し、remain intact は完全さの保持——一部も欠けていないのが違い。intact は「触れられていない」が元の意味。封・記録・建物・関係など、壊れうるものと組みます。

02

be tasked to ~

意味〜する務めを負っている

  • No matter the circumstances, I mustn't forget the responsibility I've been tasked to carry.
  • She was tasked to review every file.

💡 外から役目として与えられている形です。have to ~ が義務なのに対し、be tasked to ~ は委ねられた務め——任せた側がいるのが違い。be tasked with -ing のほうが数としては多い形で、意味はほぼ同じです。

03

be regarded as ~

意味〜とみなされる

  • I know I can't be regarded as a novice forever.
  • He is regarded as the best in the field.

💡 周りからそう扱われる形です。be called が呼び名なのに対し、be regarded as ~ は評価としての扱い——見る側の判断が入るのが違い。as のあとは名詞でも形容詞でも置けます。regard ~ as ... の受け身なので、as を落とせません。

04

the task at hand

意味目の前の仕事

  • Anyway, back to the task at hand.
  • Let's finish the task at hand first.

💡 今まさに取りかかっている用件——という形です。the work が仕事ぜんたいなのに対し、the task at hand は当面の一件——ほかを脇へ置いているのが違い。at hand が「手もとに」。back to the task at hand は脱線から戻るときの決まり文句です。

05

be on equal footing

意味対等の立場に立つ

  • I feel we should be on equal footing as far as building a relationship goes.
  • Neither side was on equal footing.

💡 足場の高さが同じである——という形です。be equal が等しさなのに対し、be on equal footing は立場の対等——やりとりの条件を言うのが違い。footing が「足場」。on an equal footing と冠詞を入れる形も同じくらい使われます。

06

I can't just let that slide.

意味それは聞き流せません

  • My, what an attitude. I can't just let that slide, you know.
  • I can't just let that slide — say it again.

💡 見過ごすわけにはいかない——という形です。That's rude. が評価なのに対し、I can't just let that slide. は対応の宣言——これから言い返すのが違い。let ~ slide が「滑らせておく」で、見逃すという意味。just が「そのまま」と効いています。

07

a figurative expression

意味ものの言い方、比喩

  • Consider the name "dreamworld" to be merely a figurative expression.
  • "Mountain of work" is just a figurative expression.

💡 字面どおりではない言い方——という形です。a word が語なのに対し、a figurative expression は比喩としての表現——実物を指していないのが違い。figurative の対が literal(字義どおりの)。誤解を先に解くのに使い、説明の場面でよく出ます。

08

carry 人 through ~

意味〜を乗り切らせる

  • Your words of praise alone would surely carry me through a hundred years of turmoil.
  • That one letter carried her through the worst month.

💡 人を支えて、その期間を越えさせる形です。help が助けなのに対し、carry 人 through ~ は運び通す——越えるべき期間があるのが違い。through のあとは期間や苦難。主語が物でも言えるのが特徴で、言葉・思い出・歌などが主語になります。

09

see ~ partway

意味〜を中途で終わらせる

  • I don't want to abandon it or see it partway.
  • We won't see this project partway.

💡 途中までで手を離してしまう形です。quit が中止なのに対し、see ~ partway は半端に見届ける——終わりまで付き合っていないのが違い。see ~ through(やり遂げる)が対で、through か partway かで最後まで行くかどうかが決まります。

10

be awfully defeatist

意味ひどく弱気である

  • Making an excuse before you even start is awfully defeatist.
  • Calling it off now would be awfully defeatist.

💡 負けを前提にしている——という形です。be negative が否定的なのに対し、be defeatist は敗北を決め込んでいる——始める前から降りているのが違い。defeat(敗北)+ -ist。awfully が「ひどく」で、とがめる口調になります。

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

第42話の実際のセリフから、書き言葉でも通用する上級構文を3つ。

PATTERN 1

Never before have 主語 + 過去分詞 ~(これまで一度も〜したことがありません)

Ah, I'm so sorry. Forgive me! Never before have I made such a terrible mistake!

経験の無さを、語順をひっくり返して強める形です。I have never made ~ が平叙なのに対し、Never before have I ~ は倒置——大げささと格式が出るのが違い。否定語を文頭に出すと、主語と助動詞が入れ替わります——have I / did I / will I。演説や芝居がかった台詞でよく出ます。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 2

Regardless of ~, I will ...(〜にかかわらず、私は…)

Do what you believe to be right. Regardless of your path, I will simply find satisfaction in your suffering.

条件を切り捨てて、こちらの構えだけを示す形です。Whatever you do, ~ が口語なのに対し、Regardless of ~ は硬い言い方——文書でも通るのが違い。of のあとは名詞で、節を置くなら regardless of whether ~。irregardless は誤った形なので使いません。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 3

~, is it not?(〜ではありませんか)

When you want to know someone's name, it's considered common courtesy to give your own first, is it not?

同意を、改まった形で取りにいく言い方です。isn't it? が口語の付加疑問なのに対し、is it not? は短縮しない形——格式が上がり、皮肉にも寄るのが違い。前が肯定なら後ろは否定という付加疑問の決まりは同じ。do you not? / have you not? も同じ作りです。

他にも使える例:

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

remain intact
