Episode Summary

Two girls meet over a laundry basket, which is the last quiet thing that happens. Then visitors arrive who talk about permission, authority and long-cherished desires, and one man who was only ever a caretaker decides to stand in front of them anyway.

💡 その場から退かずに持ちこたえる形です。fight が戦いなのに対し、stand one's ground は位置の保持——前に出るのではなく、退かないのが違い。one's が主語に合わせて変わります——stand my / his / their ground。議論でも使えて、意見を譲らない意味になります。

意味引き下がる

  • What you're witnessing now is hope. I won't back down.
  • Neither side was willing to back down.

💡 主張や構えを解いて、退く形です。give up が放棄なのに対し、back down は対立からの後退——相手と向き合っていたのが違い。自動詞なので目的語を取りません——back down from ~ で何から退くかを足します。否定で使うと宣言になります。

意味心ゆくまで

  • You can look at me that way to your heart's content, but I'm not giving you anything.
  • Eat to your heart's content.

💡 満ち足りるまで、好きなだけ——という形です。as much as you like が許可なのに対し、to one's heart's content は満足の限度まで——心のほうを基準にしているのが違い。heart's に所有の 's が入るのが形の要。皮肉にも使えて、この場面はまさにそれです。

意味〜から生まれている

  • The ancestor we copies are derived from.
  • The word is derived from Latin.

💡 元をたどるとそこに行き着く形です。come from が出どころなのに対し、be derived from ~ は派生関係——元と今が別の形なのが違い。語源・成分・制度の説明でよく使う硬い語。derive from ~ と能動でも言え、意味は変わりません。

意味長年の悲願

  • Now bring the key and seal to me so the Witch's Cult can fulfill its long-cherished desire.
  • Opening the shop was a long-cherished desire.

💡 長いあいだ胸に抱いてきた願い——という形です。a goal が目標なのに対し、a long-cherished desire は年月つき——ずっと大事にしてきたのが違い。cherish が「大切にする」。ハイフンでつないで形容詞にしており、a long-cherished dream / ambition とも言えます。

意味〜を自分への当たりとして受け取る

  • I take such a careless affront personally.
  • Don't take it personally — it's the policy, not you.

💡 自分に向けられたものとして受け取る形です。be offended が不快なのに対し、take ~ personally は受け取り方の話——相手に悪意が無くても起こるのが違い。Don't take it personally. の形がいちばんよく使う言い方で、前置きとして便利です。

意味にらみ合いのまま動けない

  • While everyone here is locked in a stalemate, something of great significance should be happening.
  • The talks are locked in a stalemate.

💡 どちらも動けず、手詰まりになっている形です。be stuck が停滞なのに対し、be locked in a stalemate は相手との均衡——互いに動けないのが違い。stalemate はチェスの「手詰まり」から。交渉・紛争・試合に使い、break the stalemate なら「打開する」。

意味自分の役として引き受ける

  • I see. Well, I'll take it upon myself then.
  • He took it upon himself to rewrite the whole thing.

💡 頼まれずに、自分の務めにしてしまう形です。volunteer が申し出なのに対し、take it upon oneself は独断——許しを得ていないのが違い。to + 動詞の原形で中身を足します。褒めにも、越権へのとがめにもどちらにも振れる言い方です。

show disdain for ~

意味〜をないものとして扱う

  • Who would show such disdain for a family member?
  • He showed open disdain for the rules.

💡 値打ちが無いものとして見下す形です。dislike が嫌いなのに対し、show disdain for ~ は軽蔑の表明——態度に出しているのが違い。disdain は無冠詞で使い、with disdain なら「さげすむように」。硬い文章に向く語です。

意味〜への明らかな侵害

  • I consider you acting out on your own a direct violation of my actions and authority.
  • That's a direct violation of the agreement.

💡 ごまかしようのない違反——という形です。a mistake が誤りなのに対し、a direct violation of ~ は規定違反——破られた決まりがあるのが違い。direct が「まっすぐな」で、言い逃れの余地を消します。契約・規約・人権と組みます。

PATTERN 1

I presume ~(〜でしょうね)

Keeping the trial in mind, I presume you'll be following yourself, right?

推定を、改まった形で置く言い方です。I think ~ が意見なのに対し、I presume ~ は根拠つきの推定——そう考えるのが当然だと言っているのが違い。I assume ~ よりさらに硬い言い方で、挿入して使うこともできます——You are, I presume, the new manager?初対面の確認にも使えます。

What's the harm in -ing?(〜するぶんには差し支えないでしょう)

Then what's the harm in just standing here, watching?

害が無いと示して、許しを取る形です。Can we ~? が許可の願いなのに対し、What's the harm in -ing? は反語——断る理由が無いと言っているのが違い。in のあとは -ing。Where's the harm in ~? とも言え、軽い押しとして働きます。

if 主語 were to + 動詞の原形(仮に〜するとしたら)

And what would happen if I were to go now?

起こりそうにないことを、仮に置いてみる形です。if I go が現実の条件なのに対し、if 主語 were to ~ は距離のある仮定——そうするつもりは無いのが違い。were は主語が何でも were。帰結には wouldを置きます。提案をやわらげるのにも使えます。

⭐ 森の人たちが退かずに戦っていると伝える、アーチの一言です。その場から退かずに持ちこたえる形です。fight が「戦う」で、前に出る側も含むのに対し、stand one's ground は位置の保持——攻めるのではなく、退かないというところが違います。one's は主語に合わせて変えます——stand my ground / his ground / their ground。hold one's ground でもほぼ同じで、stand のほうが姿が見える言い方です。戦いの場面だけの言葉ではありません——議論・交渉・値段の話でもそのまま使えて、意見を譲らないという意味になります——She stood her ground through every question.(どの質問にも、彼女は譲らなかった)褒め言葉として働くのが特徴です——refuse to move(動くのを拒む)が頑固に聞こえるのに対し、stand one's ground には勇ましさが乗ります。紛らわしいのがstand up to ~。こちらは「〜に立ち向かう」で、相手が目的語——退かないのが stand one's ground、相手に向かっていくのが stand up to ~ と分けると混ざりません。
