🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

第42話の実際のセリフから、中級で押さえたい文法を3つ。

PATTERN 1

You mustn't ever ~(決して〜してはいけません)

To break a promise is to betray that trust, so you mustn't ever do it again.

いちばん強い形で、してはいけないと伝える言い方です。Don't ~ が禁止なのに対し、You mustn't ever ~ は重い禁止——例外が無いと言っているのが違い。ever が「一度でも」。must not は話し手の強い意志なので、規則の don't have to とは別ものです。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 2

Why not + 動詞の原形 ~?(〜してみては)

Yes, of course we do. So why not take a look?

勧めを、否定疑問の形でやわらげる言い方です。You should ~ が助言なのに対し、Why not ~? は軽い勧め——断っても構わないのが違い。Why not のあとは動詞の原形で、Why don't you ~? とほぼ同じ。Why not? だけなら「いいですよ」という返事になります。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 3

I wish 主語 would ~(〜してくれたらいいのに)

I just wish she would avoid doing anything too dangerous.

相手の行いについて、叶っていない望みを言う形です。I want her to ~ が要望なのに対し、I wish 主語 would ~ は叶っていない望み——今はそうなっていないのが違い。wish のあとは wouldを使い、will にはしません。やわらかい不満として働きます。

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

shrug ~ off

⭐ 楽なほうを選べば弱いままだと、エミリアが自分に言った一言です。肩をすくめて、受け流してしまう形です。ignore が「無視する」で、はじめから相手にしないのに対し、shrug ~ off は気づいたうえで軽く扱う——受け取ってはいるところが違います。肩をすくめる動作(shrug)がそのまま語になった形。英語の世界では、肩をすくめるのが「どうでもいい」の合図なので、そこから意味が伸びています。代名詞は必ず間に入ります——shrug it off(shrug off it は誤り)。組む相手に幅があります——批判・心配・噂・痛み・けが。スポーツの記事では「軽傷をものともせず」の意味でよく出ます。よい意味にも悪い意味にも振れます——動じない強さにもなり、向き合うべきことから逃げているにもなります。この場面は後者で、don't want to just shrug off と自分を戒める形で使われています。紛らわしいのがbrush ~ off。こちらは主に「人をあしらう」で、相手が人——出来事を軽く扱うのが shrug off、人をそっけなく払うのが brush off と分けると混ざりません。

★★★★★ 5.0 / 5

第42話は小さな約束がひとつ交わされる回。幼いエミリアの場面、そして現在のオットー・ラムとの軽口——中級版はその「約束と言いわけの英語」に絞りました。

見出しはshrug ~ off / keep one's word / hold ~ to that / blame things on other people / have one's hands full のように、約束をめぐる言い回しを中心に据えました。語彙は crybaby / mischievous / carefree / dependable / dazzling のような子どもの頃の場面の語で揃えています。
