🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions |

01

the likes of ~

  • They won't be overturned by the likes of you!
  • I won't take orders from the likes of him.

someone like you が中立なのに対し、the likes of ~ は格下げ——同類でまとめているのが違い。 褒めにも使えて、the likes of which we've never seen なら「前例の無いほどの」になります。

02

carry weight with ~

  • Nothing you say carries any weight with me, Roswaal.
  • Her opinion carries weight with the board.

03

profess to ~

  • If you cared about your family as you profess to, would you truly change so readily?
  • He professes to know nothing about it.

as you profess to

04

per the terms of ~

  • Per the terms of our wager, your greatest weapon was bound.
  • Per the terms of the lease, we give one month's notice.

as agreed が合意どおりなのに対し、per the terms of ~ は条項の指定——文面があるのが違い。

05

in the grand scheme of things

  • In the grand scheme of things, so long as that one crucial person remains, the battle will never end.
  • In the grand scheme of things, a day's delay is nothing.

overall が総じてなのに対し、in the grand scheme of things は視野の引き上げ——小事を小事として扱うのが違い。

06

be held in contempt

  • In the end, she'll be hurt and held in contempt.
  • Anyone who asked was held in contempt.

be disliked が嫌われるのに対し、be held in contempt は見下し——人として下に置かれるのが違い。

07

aspire to ~

  • She'll be sorry that she ever even aspired to make such a change.
  • He aspired to run his own shop.

08

force ~ upon ...

  • We both force our lofty ideals upon the women we love.
  • Nobody forced this rule upon you.

09

not waver

  • And that circumstance will not waver.
  • Her support never wavered.

10

Enlighten me.

  • Sounds like you've got the wrong idea. — Enlighten me, then.
  • Enlighten me — what did I miss?

Tell me.

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

PATTERN 1

How can you see A and not B?(どうしてAだけ見えて、Bは見えないのですか)

How can you see the frailty in it and not the power it holds?!

You're ignoring B. How can you see A and not B? and not のあとは A と同じ形をそろえます。How can you ~?

PATTERN 2

Could it be that ~?(ひょっとして〜なのでは)

Or could it be that all of this time, they actually meant nothing to you whatsoever?

Maybe ~ が推量なのに対し、Could it be that ~?

PATTERN 3

What could 主語 ever hope to ~?(〜に何ができるというのです)

And what could somebody so common ever hope to achieve?

You can't do it. が断定なのに対し、What could 主語 ever hope to ~?

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

carry weight with ~

ではなく His name carries weight.
