Episode Summary

A village sends three men off with jokes about wiping their noses, and a maid kneels to ask a favour she has never asked before. Then two people who argued about whether anyone can change find out, and a brother and sister meet again in the worst possible room.

意味あなたが言えることじゃない

  • Don't do anything crazy. — Well, you're one to talk.
  • You're one to talk — you were late twice.

💡 あなたも同じではないか、と返す言い方です。That's unfair. が抗議なのに対し、You're one to talk. は資格の指摘——言う立場にないと言っているのが違い。one が「そういう人」。Look who's talking. でも同じで、軽口として使うのがふつうです。

stand tall

意味胸を張って立つ

  • But now you're standing tall right in front of me, chest high and eyes facing forward.
  • She stood tall through the whole meeting.

💡 背筋を伸ばして、引け目なく立つ形です。be confident が自信なのに対し、stand tall は姿の話——見た目に出ているのが違い。tall は副詞のように使われています。身長の話ではありませんので、小さい人にも使えます。

The rest is up to you.

意味あとは君に任せる

  • So anyway, Ram, the rest is up to you.
  • I've done my part. The rest is up to you.

💡 ここから先は相手の判断である——という形です。Please do it. が依頼なのに対し、The rest is up to you. は引き渡し——自分の分は終えているのが違い。be up to 人が「〜次第である」。It's up to you. なら「君が決めていい」になります。

keep ~ in mind

意味〜を覚えておく

  • Thanks, guys. I'll keep that in mind!
  • Keep the deadline in mind.

💡 頭の片隅に置いておく形です。remember が記憶なのに対し、keep ~ in mind は保持——これから役立てる前提が違い。代名詞は間に入ります——keep it in mind。bear ~ in mind のほうが少し硬い言い方です。

set off for ~

意味〜へ出発する

  • Those three hitched the carriage and set off for the mansion.
  • We set off for the coast at dawn.

💡 目的地へ向けて出る形です。leave が出発なのに対し、set off for ~ は行き先つき——向かう先が決まっているのが違い。for のあとが行き先で、set off to + 動詞の原形 なら目的。旅立ちの場面に向きます。

意味どうして急にそんな話に

  • Miss Emilia, I am truly sorry. — What brought all this on?
  • What brought all this on? You were fine yesterday.

💡 急な変化の元を尋ねる言い方です。Why? が理由なのに対し、What brought all this on? はきっかけ——何かが引き起こしたと見ているのが違い。bring on が「引き起こす」。all this が「この一連のこと」で、言葉にも症状にも使えます。

get ~ out of here

意味〜をここから連れ出す

  • You've gotta take her out of here as soon as you get an opening.
  • Get her out of here before it starts.

💡 その場から外へ連れ出す形です。save が救出なのに対し、get ~ out of here は移動——今すぐという急ぎが違い。Get out of here! だけなら「出て行け」、あるいは「まさか」という驚きにもなります。

drag ~ out

意味〜を引きずり出す

  • This time, things are gonna be different, because I intend to drag you out.
  • Somebody dragged him out to the party.

💡 いやがる相手を、力ずくで外へ出す形です。invite が誘いなのに対し、drag ~ out は強引さ——相手が動かない前提が違い。代名詞は間に入ります——drag you out。drag out は「長引かせる」の意味もあるので、目的語の有無で読み分けます。

意味口火を切る

  • And to kick things off, the first thing I'm gonna do is smash that wall.
  • Let's kick things off with introductions.

💡 最初のひと手で始める形です。start が開始なのに対し、kick things off は景気よく始める——勢いがあるのが違い。サッカーのキックオフから。with ~ で最初の一手を足せます。

in a heartbeat

意味一瞬で

  • If I rush over there, then I'll be dead in a heartbeat.
  • I'd say yes in a heartbeat.

💡 心臓がひと打ちする間に——という形です。quickly が速さなのに対し、in a heartbeat は即座——迷いが無いのが違い。決断の速さにも使えて、I'd do it in a heartbeat. なら「迷わずやる」になります。

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

第46話の実際のセリフから、中級で押さえたい文法を3つ。

PATTERN 1

Is it so hard to just ~?(ただ〜するのが、そんなに難しいの)

Is it so hard to just try and thank people normally?

あきれを込めて、簡単なことを促す形です。Please just ~ が依頼なのに対し、Is it so hard to just ~? は反語——難しいはずがないと言っているのが違い。just が「ただ〜するだけ」とハードルの低さを示します。親しい相手への軽い小言に向きます。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 2

What could have possibly made you ~?(いったい何があなたを〜させたの)

What could have possibly made you change your mind and decide to help me?

変化の原因が思いつかない、と示す形です。Why did you ~? が理由なのに対し、What could have possibly made you ~? は驚きつき——見当がつかないのが違い。make 人 + 動詞の原形の形で、possibly が「いったい」。could have が推量の過去です。

I'd say 主語 ~(〜だと思うけどね)

That sounds like sarcasm, because I'd say you're the one who's practically a giant now!

自分の見方を、少し引いた形で出す言い方です。I think ~ が意見なのに対し、I'd say ~ は控えめな断定——would が押しを弱めるのが違い。評価・見積もり・言い返しに広く使えて、I'd say about twenty. のように数の見当にも使えます。

⭐ 「無茶するなよ」と言われたラムが、そのまま返した一言です。あなたも同じではないか——と言い返す形です。That's unfair. が「不公平だ」と抗議するのに対し、You're one to talk. は資格の指摘——それを言う立場にないと言っているところが違います。one は「そういう人」。the one ではなく one なので、「そんなことを言う側の人」という括りになります。後ろに足して的を絞れます——You're one to talk about ~ の形で、You're one to talk about tidying up.(片づけのことを言える立場じゃないだろう)軽口として使うのがふつうです——本気の非難ではなく、仲のよさの裏返し。この場面も、送り出しの直前のやりとりです。Look who's talking. でもまったく同じ意味で、どちらもよく使われます。紛らわしいのがThat's rich.。こちらは「よく言うよ」で、あきれが前に出る言い方——立場を突くのが You're one to talk.、あきれを出すのが That's rich. と分けると混ざりません。
