🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions |

01

be prioritized over ~

  • My love will be prioritized over the feelings of the dead.
  • Safety is prioritized over speed here.

02

strike terror in ~

  • I admit, you did strike terror in me, but even a great spirit is not perfect.
  • The announcement struck terror in the whole office.

03

I've gotta hand it to you.

  • I've gotta hand it to you. You're definitely thorough, aren't you?
  • I've gotta hand it to you — that worked.

Well done. I've gotta hand it to you. hand it to 人が「手柄を渡す」。I have to hand it to you.

04

Don't get full of yourself.

  • Don't get full of yourself, witch's disciple.
  • Don't get full of yourself after one win.

Be humble. Don't get full of yourself. be full of oneself

05

Am I correct in guessing ~?

  • Am I correct in guessing that you now remember what happened before your contract?
  • Am I correct in guessing you've already read it?

Do you ~? Am I correct in guessing ~? Am I right in thinking ~?

06

look longingly upon ~

  • I am forever looking longingly upon my former years.
  • He looked longingly upon the old photographs.

07

fault ~ for ...

  • I'm not going to fault you for what you are.
  • Nobody would fault her for leaving.

can't fault ~ for ...

08

touch upon ~

  • After repeating it over and over, touching upon it so many times, you still haven't realized.
  • The report touches upon the cost only briefly.

09

What's true now is ~

  • That was true at first, but not anymore. What's true now is this: I love you.
  • What's true now is that the deadline has moved.

What's true now

10

be in a position where ~

  • Thanks to you, Great Spirit, I'm now in a position where at least I can fight.
  • We're in a position where we can choose.

be able to ~ が能力なのに対し、be in a position where ~ は立場——周りの条件が効いているのが違い。where のあとは節を置き、be in a position to + 動詞の原形 も同じ意味。

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

PATTERN 1

Are you proposing (that) I ~?(わたしに〜せよと仰るのですか)

Are you proposing I ask the great spirit to stall you and use that as an opening?

Do you mean ~? が確認なのに対し、Are you proposing ~?

PATTERN 2

couldn't begin to ~(〜などできるはずもない)

It's something I couldn't begin to do, and even if I tried, my wish wouldn't be fulfilled.

I couldn't begin to thank you.

PATTERN 3

What of ~?(〜はどうなるのです)

Such cheap emotions make no sense! What of your revenge?

What about ~?

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

be prioritized over ~

be more important than ~ が「〜より大事」と価値を比べるのに対し、be prioritized over ~ は順位づけ——どちらも大事だと認めたうえで順番を決めているところが違います。 能動なら prioritize A over B——I prioritized my love over their feelings.紛らわしいのがtake precedence over ~。
