💡 実際より上に見積もる形です。trust が信頼なのに対し、overestimate ~ は見積もりの誤り——あとで足りなくなるのが違い。over- が「過ぎる」。人にも量にも使えて、underestimate(低く見る)が対になります。

意味〜を役立てる

  • I guess it's time to make use of my unparalleled knowledge of the modern world.
  • Let's make use of the space while it's free.

💡 持っているものを、実際に使って効かせる形です。use が使用なのに対し、make use of ~ は活用——眠っていたものを持ち出すのが違い。good / full を挟めて、make good use of ~ なら「うまく使う」になります。

be stingy with ~

意味〜を出し惜しみする

  • Well, I couldn't very well be stingy with it!
  • Don't be stingy with the butter.

💡 けちけちして、量を渋る形です。save が節約なのに対し、be stingy with ~ はけちさ——よくないこととして言うのが違い。with のあとは物。料理の話でいちばんよく聞き、褒め言葉にはなりません。

a fresh start

意味出直し

  • So can I assume this is a good time for a fresh start?
  • April always feels like a fresh start.

💡 いったん白紙にして、もう一度始める形です。trying again が再挑戦なのに対し、a fresh start は前を持ち込まない——積み上げを捨てているのが違い。fresh が「新しい」。make / get / have と組み、土地や職を変える話でよく出ます。

put ~ out

意味〜を消す

  • We can't put that out! We've gotta run!
  • They put the fire out in ten minutes.

💡 燃えているものを消す形です。stop が停止なのに対し、put ~ out は消火——火や灯りに限るのが違い。代名詞は間に入ります——put it out。put out には「外に出す」「困らせる」という別の意味もあります。

意味こんがり焼ける

  • If I burn to a crisp, write "Otto's oil" as the cause.
  • I left it in and it burned to a crisp.

💡 黒く焦げるまで焼ける——という形です。be burned がやけどなのに対し、burn to a crisp は焦げきる——かたく乾いた状態までいくのが違い。crisp が「ぱりぱり」。料理の失敗と、日焼けの冗談にもよく使います。

weigh ~ down

意味〜の足を引っぱる

  • I'm sorry. I just ended up weighing you down even further.
  • The extra bags weighed us down.

💡 重みで、相手の動きを鈍らせる形です。be a burden が負担なのに対し、weigh ~ down は重さの作用——沈ませる向きが違い。代名詞は間に入ります。気持ちについても使えて、「心を重くする」の意味になります。

意味〜したほうが早い

  • Instead of doing weird stuff like that — it's faster to do this!
  • It's faster to walk than to wait.

💡 二つの手を比べて、こちらを選ぶ形です。Let's do this. が提案なのに対し、It's faster to ~ は理由つき——速さで押しているのが違い。It が形式主語で、to + 動詞の原形が中身。than to ~ で比べる相手を足せます。

意味首根っこを掴んで引っぱる

  • And if she says no, I'll drag her by the scruff of her neck!
  • He was dragged by the scruff of the neck to apologize.

💡 抵抗させずに、襟首を掴んで連れていく形です。pull が引くのに対し、by the scruff of the neck は掴む場所の指定——猫をつまむような扱いが違い。scruff が「首の後ろの皮」。冗談として言うのがふつうです。

意味生きて帰ってくる

  • Just come back alive.
  • Whatever happens, come back alive.

💡 無事な形で戻ってくる——という形です。come back が帰還なのに対し、come back alive は条件つき——危ない場所へ行く前提が違い。alive が補語として後ろに付き、形容詞ひとつで重さを足します。送り出す側の言葉です。

PATTERN 1

Don't you think you might be -ing ~?(少し〜しすぎていませんか)

Don't you think you might be overestimating him a bit?

行きすぎをやわらかく指摘する形です。You're wrong. が否定なのに対し、Don't you think you might be -ing ~? は二重のぼかし——might と Don't you think が押しを弱めるのが違い。a bit / a little を足すとさらにやわらかくなります。目上の相手にも使える形です。

Try not to sound so 形容詞(そんなに〜そうに言わないで)

Oh, come on! Try not to sound so discouraged about everything!

中身ではなく、口ぶりに注文をつける形です。Cheer up. が励ましなのに対し、Try not to sound so ~ は声の調子への注文——気持ちは否定していないのが違い。sound のあとは形容詞で、sound like + 名詞とは形が変わります。Try not to ~ が命令をやわらげます。

What's so hard about saying "I don't wanna be alone"?

簡単なはずだと示して、相手を促す形です。Just say it. が催促なのに対し、What's so hard about -ing ~? は反語——難しいはずがないと言っているのが違い。about のあとは -ing。やさしい口調で言えば、背中を押す言葉になり、強く言えば責める言葉になります。

⭐ 火だらけの屋敷へ向かう昴が、軽口として残した一言です。黒く焦げるまで焼ける——という形です。be burned が「やけどする/焼ける」と幅が広いのに対し、burn to a crisp は焦げきる——かたく乾いた状態まで行ってしまうところが違います。crisp が「ぱりぱりしたもの」。水気が飛んで、指で崩れるという絵です。to a crisp の形は固定で、to crisp とは言いません。いちばんよく使うのは料理の失敗です——I left it in and it burned to a crisp.(入れっぱなしで、真っ黒に焦げてしまった)次に多いのが日焼けです——痛いほど焼けた肩や背中について、冗談として言います。人が焼ける話に使うと、わざと軽く聞こえるのが特徴で、この場面もそれを狙った言い方になっています。紛らわしいのがchar。こちらは「表面を黒く焼く」で、料理では狙ってやることもある——失敗として焦げきるのが burn to a crisp、黒く焼き付けるのが char と分けると混ざりません。
