意味今も〜の心に残り続ける
- That event happened in a matter of moments, but it still haunts me to this day.
- The mistake haunts me to this day.
💡 過ぎたことが、今も離れずについてくる形です。remember が記憶なのに対し、haunt ~ は取り憑くような残り方——思い出したくないのに出てくるのが違い。主語は出来事のほう。to this day が「今日まで」で、長さを足します。
意味眠ったままである
- I came here to fulfill my role along with my ancestor who lies dormant within this crystal.
- The idea lay dormant for years.
💡 働かずに、静かに横たわっている形です。sleep が睡眠なのに対し、lie dormant は休止状態——いつか動きうるのが違い。dormant は種や火山にも使う語。lie の活用は lie / lay / lainで、置く lay とは別です。
意味万一〜の場合には
- In the event that this facility is destroyed, the damage will be irreparable.
- In the event that the train is late, call me.
💡 起こるかもしれないことを先に置く形です。if ~ が条件なのに対し、in the event that ~ は硬い言い方——文書向きなのが違い。that は落とせます。in the event of + 名詞 の形もあり、掲示や規約でよく見ます。
意味取り返しがつかない
- If the one who runs it is lost, the damage will be irreparable.
- The harm to her name was irreparable.
💡 直しようがない——という形です。be bad が程度なのに対し、be irreparable は修復不能——元に戻せないのが違い。repair(直す)に ir-。damage / harm / loss と組み、報道や報告書でよく出ます。

take sheer pleasure in ~
意味〜をただただ楽しむ
- This is the one thing old folks like me take sheer pleasure in.
- He takes sheer pleasure in pruning the garden.
💡 まぎれもない喜びを、そこから得る形です。enjoy が楽しむのに対し、take sheer pleasure in ~ は純度の強調——ほかの目的が無いのが違い。sheer が「まったくの」。in のあとは名詞か -ing で、take pleasure in ~ が基本形です。
意味〜を受け継がせる
- We each share an immense amount of knowledge. I feel I should pass it down.
- The recipe was passed down three generations.
💡 次の世代へ渡していく形です。teach が教授なのに対し、pass ~ down は継承——代をまたぐのが違い。代名詞は間に入ります——pass it down。技・道具・名前・物語と組み、受け身でよく使います。

意味とくに記すべきことは無かった
- Nothing of note happened for the next 400 years.
- Nothing of note happened while you were out.
💡 書き留めるに値することが無い——という形です。nothing happened が無なのに対し、nothing of note は価値の判断——小事はあったのが違い。of note が「注目に値する」。年代記のような書き方なので、長い期間とよく組みます。
意味〜に突き動かされる
- Driven by envy and jealousy, I buried my emotions and stopped talking.
- She was driven by curiosity alone.
💡 その感情に背中を押されて動く形です。because of ~ が理由なのに対し、be driven by ~ は原動力——自分では止められないのが違い。分詞で文頭に置けるのが便利で、Driven by ~, 主語 + 動詞 の形が書き言葉でよく出ます。

意味膨大な量の〜

- It took an immense amount of work.
💡 測りきれないほど多い——という形です。a lot of ~ が口語なのに対し、an immense amount of ~ は硬く大きい——量として捉えているのが違い。amount は数えられない名詞と組むので、knowledge / work / data には使えますが、人や本には number を使います。
意味〜するだけの備えがある
- That makes you more than well-equipped to survive on your own.
- She's well-equipped to handle the questions.
💡 必要なものが揃っていて、やれる形です。be able to ~ が能力なのに対し、be well-equipped to ~ は装備の話——道具や資質が揃っているのが違い。equip が「備え付ける」。more than を足すと「十分すぎるほど」になります。

PATTERN 1
There's no one as 形容詞 as ~(〜ほど…な者はいない)
As far as I know, there's no human alive as skilled at magic as you.
わたしの知るかぎり、魔法にかけてあなたほど巧みな人間はいません。
比べる相手を一人だけ立てて、頂点だと示す形です。You're the best. が最上級なのに対し、There's no one as ~ as ... は同等比較の否定——並ぶ者がいないと言っているのが違い。as 形容詞 as のあいだにat ~ を挟んで分野を足せます。alive を入れると範囲が締まります。

it is my responsibility to ~(〜するのがわたしの務めです)
Now that we have been given this opportunity, it is my responsibility to fulfill our role.
この機を与えられた以上、役目を果たすのがわたしの務めです。
自分の務めとして引き受けると述べる形です。I have to ~ が義務なのに対し、it is my responsibility to ~ は責任の表明——自分から名乗っているのが違い。it が形式主語で、to + 動詞の原形が中身。改まった場で名乗る形です。

PATTERN 3
Your ~ is appreciated, but ...(お心づかいは有り難いのですが)
Your kind gesture is appreciated, but the reason I came here is to fulfill my role.
お心づかいは有り難いのですが、わたしが来たのは役目を果たすためです。
まず受け取ってから、丁寧に断る形です。No, thank you. が短い辞退なのに対し、Your ~ is appreciated, but ... は受領つきの辞退——相手の好意を立てているのが違い。受け身にすることで、誰が有り難いかを言わずに済みます。仕事の断りにそのまま使える形です。
他にも使える例:
- Your offer is appreciated, but we've decided otherwise.(お申し出は有り難いのですが、別の形に決めました)

⭐ 一瞬で終わった出来事を、四百年ぶん抱えてきたベアトリスの一言です。過ぎたことが、今も離れずについてくる——という形です。remember が「覚えている」と自分の行いを言うのに対し、haunt ~ は取り憑くような残り方——思い出したくないのに出てくるところが違います。主語は出来事のほうです——記憶・失敗・言葉・光景が主語になり、人が主語になることはありません。haunt はもともと「幽霊が出る」——a haunted house(幽霊屋敷)と同じ語です。to this day が「今日まで」で、年月の長さをひと言で足せます。still を入れるのが定番——it still haunts me to this day。厳密には重なりますが、決まった言い方になっています。悪いことだけとは限りません——美しい光景や、言えなかった一言にも使えます。紛らわしいのがstay with ~。こちらは「心に残る」で、よい意味にも中立にも使える——つきまとうのが haunt、残るのが stay with と分けると混ざりません。
