Episode Summary

Subaru wakes in the mansion again — the same day, a different starting point — and sets out to live it better rather than repeat it. He takes a bath with the lord and gets a lecture on ownership, is taught to read and write by one maid, argues with the other about clothes and hair and ends up owing her an apology, and scouts the village for the outing he means to ask for. That night he asks, and she says yes. He decides to stay awake until the promised morning.

これは 中級レベル版。第5話は、メイドの妹との行き違い村の子どもたちの下見、そして夜の誘いが英語の見どころです。Mind if I join you? / Point taken. / take a hint といった実際に作中で使われている表現に、prank / villagers / outfits / forgiveness / eternity のような語彙を合わせました。もう一方のレベルは〈上級〉版でどうぞ。

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

第5話の実際のセリフから、中級で押さえたい文法を3つ。

PATTERN 1

Why are you being so + 形容詞?(どうしてそんなに〜なの?)

Thanks, but why are you being so nice to me?

いまのその振る舞いは、どうしてかとたずねる形です。Why are you so ~? が性質を聞くのに対し、Why are you being so ~? はいまだけの振る舞い——ふだんは違うという含みが違い。be動詞を進行形にするのがこの形の要で、一時的な態度を表します。You're being rude. なら「いまの態度が失礼だ」——人格を責めていません

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 2

Would you please + 動詞の原形?(〜していただけますか)

Rem, would you please alter that one for him?

ていねいに、はっきりと頼む形です。Can you ~? が気軽なのに対し、Would you please ~? は改まった依頼——断りにくさも増すのが違い。please の位置would you のすぐあとが自然。Could you please ~? はさらにやわらかく、Would は意思、Could は可能——頼みごとではほぼ同じに使えます

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 3

I bet ~(きっと〜だろう)

I bet the weather will be absolutely lovely tomorrow.

賭けてもいい、というくらい確からしいと言う形です。Maybe ~ が半々なのに対し、I bet ~ はかなり自信がある——それでも断定は避けているのが違い。that は省くのがふつう本当に賭けているわけではありませんI bet you ~ と人を挟むと「絶対そうだって」と押しが強まります。

他にも使える例:

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

Point taken.

⭐ 気にしていたと認めた相手に、昴が返す一言。その指摘は、確かに受け取った——という形です。You're right. が「あなたが正しい」と全面的に認めるのに対し、Point taken. は「いまの一点は認める」——受け取ったのは論点ひとつだけというところまで含みます。だから、負けを認めたことにはなりません——議論をここで止めて、先へ進むための一言です。point は「論点・指摘」で、taken は「受け取られた」——主語も動詞も省いた形のまま決まり文句になっています。会議でも、友達どうしでも使え、Point taken. のあとにこれからどうするかを足すと感じがよくなります(Point taken — I'll fix it.)。

Mind if I join you? / Point taken. / take a hint / have a favor to ask / Say you'll go. のように、誘い、頼み、引き際の言い方を中心に据えました。語彙は prank / villagers / outfits / forgiveness / eternity のような暮らしの語で揃えています。

この回でとくに効くのは、相手に向かう英語です。Why are you being so + 形容詞?(どうしてそんなに〜なの?)、Would you please + 動詞の原形?(〜していただけますか)、I bet ~(きっと〜だろう)——いまの態度をたずねる・ていねいに頼む・自信をもって見立てる型が並んでいます。

総合難易度:★★★☆☆(人づきあいの言い方が中心)/英語学習価値:★★★★★(誘いと頼みがまとめて手に入る)/おすすめ度:★★★★★。上級版は同じ回の禁書庫の問答、風呂場の理屈、読み書きの授業、謝罪を扱っているので、二つの記事で重なりがありません
