🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions |

01

hold a candle to ~

  • Even the current Master Swordsman, Reinhard, can't hold a candle to my brother's knightly ways!
  • No other bakery in town can hold a candle to this one.

be worse than ~ が単なる比較なのに対し、hold a candle to ~ は比較にすらならない——差が桁違いなのが違い。

02

lose all restraint

  • I lose all restraint when it comes to family.
  • He loses all restraint the moment someone mentions football.

when it comes to ~ と組むと、「〜の話になると」と弱点を告白する言い方になります。

03

honor one's will

  • Know that going forward I have every intention of honoring your will, Lady Emilia.
  • We will honor his will to the letter.

04

set one's sights on ~

  • The ones she set her sights on were people who had considerable talents but troubled personalities.
  • She set her sights on the top job and got it.

05

earn someone's allegiance

  • She earned their allegiance, and with her flexible perspective, set forth massive reforms.
  • It took him years to earn their allegiance.

06

be revered as ~

  • She's now revered as the “Sun Princess” and gains momentum by the day.
  • He is revered as the father of the field.

07

in the possession of ~

  • The magic crystal you're looking for is currently in the possession of the heir to the biggest trade company.
  • The letters are in the possession of the family.

08

extend an invitation to ~

  • Lady Anastasia would like to extend an invitation to Emilia to the Watergate City of Priestella.
  • The school extended an invitation to both families.

09

hold weight

  • You see, my opinion is the only one that holds any weight here.
  • His name still holds weight in this industry.

10

rekindle an old friendship

  • Look you guys, it's perfectly normal to rekindle an old friendship, but...
  • The reunion gave them a chance to rekindle an old friendship.

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

PATTERN 1

It appears to have + 過去分詞(〜だったようだ)

Your status changed, but it appears to have had little effect on your disposition.

It appears that it had ~ が節で言う形なのに対し、It appears to have + 過去分詞 は不定詞で畳む——一文が締まって、報告らしくなるのが違い。

PATTERN 2

It's built in the middle of a lake, and whenever it rains, the whole city ends up underwater.

PATTERN 3

I never would have imagined (that) ~(〜とは思いもしませんでした)

No, I'm just shocked the rumors are actually true. I never would've imagined someone like him is a spirit knight.

I didn't know ~ が知識の有無なのに対し、I never would have imagined ~ は想像の外——驚きの大きさが出るのが違い。never が would の前に入るのが要点で、would never have ~ より強めに響きます。

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

hold a candle to ~

be worse than ~ が単なる比較なのに対し、hold a candle to ~ は比較の土俵にすら上がらないところが違います。 A can't hold a candle to B(AはBの足元にも及ばない)の形で覚えると主語と目的語をひっくり返さずに済みます。 紛らわしいのがbe no match for ~。こちらは勝ち負けがはっきりした場面で使い、hold a candle to ~ は質そのものを比べる——勝負なら be no match for、出来ばえなら hold a candle to と分けると混ざりません。
