🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions |

01

keep ~ in the dark

  • I can understand you're a bit upset, but I didn't want to keep you in the dark with this.
  • They kept the staff in the dark until the deal closed.

02

settle the score with ~

  • Since it concerns my memories, I'd much prefer to settle the score with Gluttony myself.
  • He came back to settle the score with his old rival.

03

live up to ~'s expectations

  • It means the world to hear that. I swear I'll do my best to live up to your expectations.
  • The sequel didn't live up to anyone's expectations.

live up to one's name / reputation

04

be too kind for one's own good

  • Crusch was also intent that you be let in on things. She's too kind for her own good sometimes.
  • He's too honest for his own good.

be very kind がただの称賛なのに対し、too ~ for one's own good は心配まじり——度が過ぎていると言っているのが違い。

05

would give anything to ~

  • Why can I not speak this way with my grandson? I would give anything to be able to.
  • I'd give anything to hear her sing once more.

I'd give anything for a quiet week.(静かな一週間のためなら何でも差し出す)のように使えます。

06

turn one's eyes from ~

  • I had turned my eyes from that regret while seeking revenge for my wife.
  • We can't turn our eyes from what the numbers are telling us.

07

close the rift

  • I want nothing more than to close the rift between the two of us that I created.
  • It took years to close the rift between the two branches.

heal the rift / bridge the rift

08

be no match for ~

  • To be honest, I am simply no match for you, Subaru.
  • On paper, our team was no match for theirs.

be weaker than ~ が程度の比較なのに対し、be no match for ~ は勝負にならない——結果が見えているのが違い。

09

the ace up one's sleeve

  • It's the ace up my sleeve.
  • She still had one ace up her sleeve.

a good plan がただの良案なのに対し、the ace up one's sleeve は隠し持った切り札——相手に見せていないのが違い。

10

when the opportunity arises

  • I have faith when the opportunity arises, fate will bring us back together on its own.
  • We'll revisit the idea when the opportunity arises.

when I have time が予定の話なのに対し、when the opportunity arises は縁待ち——こちらから作るものではないのが違い。

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

PATTERN 1

I couldn't be happier to see you again, Lady Emilia.

I'm very ashamed. I couldn't be more ashamed. could not be + 比較級の並びで覚えます。

PATTERN 2

nowhere near as ~ as …(…

Yes, but her achievements are nowhere near as magnificent as yours.

not as ~ as … が単なる否定なのに対し、nowhere near as ~ as …

PATTERN 3

much less ~(まして〜など)

I wouldn't so much as consider bringing my brother before a ruffian like yourself, much less my master.

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

keep ~ in the dark

about ~ を足せば、何について伏せたかを言えます——They kept me in the dark about the merger.(合併の件を伏せられていた)。

見出しはkeep ~ in the dark / settle the score with ~ / would give anything to ~ / turn one's eyes from ~ / close the rift のように、伏せていたことを口に出す言い回しを中心に据えました。

couldn't be + 比較級(これ以上〜ではありえない)、nowhere near as ~ as …(… I couldn't agree more.
