🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions |

01

get a taste of one's own medicine

  • He just got a taste of his own medicine.
  • The prankster finally got a taste of his own medicine.

lose が単なる敗北なのに対し、a taste of one's own medicine は因果が返ってきた——同じやり方でやり返されているのが違い。 give ~ a taste of their own medicine

02

You don't take no for an answer.

  • You don't take no for an answer, do you?
  • She doesn't take no for an answer.

be persistent がしつこいのに対し、not take no for an answer は断りを受け取らない——「いいえ」を答えとして認めないのが違い。

03

cut ~ some slack

  • He didn't mean any harm by it, so cut him some slack, huh?
  • It's his first week — cut him some slack.

04

barge in

  • What are you gonna do, just barge in there?
  • Sorry to barge in, but this can't wait.

05

worth a shot

  • No, thanks! — Well, worth a shot.
  • It probably won't work, but it's worth a shot.

06

get away with ~

  • You're not trying to get away with listening to my songs for free, are you?
  • He got away with it because nobody checked.

get away with murder

07

safe and sound

  • There. Safe and sound now.
  • They got home safe and sound.

08

creep ~ out

  • I don't think anyone else has creeped me out this much with just their words.
  • That mask really creeps me out.

09

sing one's heart out

  • I hope all of you are ready, because I intend to sing my heart out for you this morning!
  • She sang her heart out at the school concert.

cry / laugh / work one's heart out

10

be over it

  • Eh, I'm sure he'll be over it after he gets a little sleep.
  • I was upset, but I'm over it now.

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

PATTERN 1

as many as + 主語 + can(できるだけたくさん)

Oh, good. Just keep them coming. I can eat as many as you can make!

数えられない量なら as much as。

PATTERN 2

get used to + ~ing(〜するのに慣れる)

That being said, I could get used to eating that kind of food, I suppose.

PATTERN 3

It's only fair (that) ~(〜して当然だ)

You did listen to my song, so I think it's only fair you pay me something, right?

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

worth a shot

Let's try. give it a shot(やってみる)、take a shot at ~(〜に挑んでみる)と、同じ shot の一家でまとめて覚えると効率がいいです。 ひとつは、始める前の一押し——It probably won't work, but it's worth a shot.(たぶん無理だけど、やるだけやってみよう)。 主語と be 動詞は落とすのがふつうで、Well, worth a shot.

見出しはworth a shot / cut ~ some slack / barge in / get away with ~ / safe and sound のように、短くて、その場で出せる言い回しを中心に据えました。

as many as + 主語 + can(できるだけたくさん)、get used to + ~ing(〜するのに慣れる)、It's only fair (that) ~(〜して当然だ)——めいっぱいと言う・慣れを言う・筋を通す型が並んでいます。

You don't take no for an answer. / creep ~ out / be over it
