🔥 Must-Know Expressions
10 expressions |
01
be in no position to ~
- You, of all people, are in no position to criticize me.
- I'm in no position to give anyone advice on money.
shouldn't ~ が単なる不適切なのに対し、be in no position to ~ は資格の欠如——立場そのものが無いのが違い。
02
take a weight off ~'s shoulders
- If I'm not mistaken my old man took a huge weight off your shoulders.
- Hearing that took a weight off my shoulders.
help が手助けなのに対し、take a weight off ~'s shoulders は重荷の移動——負担が実際に減っているのが違い。That's a weight off my shoulders.
- And Theresia van Astrea won't let you off that easy.
- The judge didn't let him off easy.
let ~ off the hook
- If you have no other business here, it would be best if you left on your own accord.
- She stepped down on her own accord.
of one's own accord のほうが辞書どおりの形で、on も口語では広く使われます。
- I like to think I do have some stake in all this.
- Everyone in this room has a stake in the outcome.
be interested in ~ が関心なのに対し、have a stake in ~ は利害——損得が実際にかかっているのが違い。 stakeholder(利害関係者)もここから来ています。
- All things considered, your sense of impending danger is right on the money.
- Her guess about the cost was right on the money.
be correct が正解なのに対し、be right on the money は的中——言い当てたことへの感心が入るのが違い。
- I cannot rule that out.
- We can't rule out a delay just yet.
- About that big scruffy guy — you don't think he's planning on abusing his position?
- He was removed for abusing his position.
- Your singing was indeed worthy of my praise.
- The work is worthy of a closer look.
- I ask that you please bestow your attention upon me for but a brief moment.
- The title was bestowed upon her last spring.

🎯 Grammar Patterns
3 patterns
PATTERN 1
What would happen if + 主語 + 過去形 ~?(もし〜だったらどうなるか)
What would happen if he were treated poorly and became rebellious towards the kingdom?
What will happen if ~?
- What would happen if the supplier pulled out?(仕入れ先が降りたらどうなりますか)
- What would happen if we said no?(断ったらどうなるのでしょう)
PATTERN 2
It couldn't hurt to + 動詞の原形(〜しても損はない)
That being said, it couldn't hurt to have some fun and chaos on the way there.
- It couldn't hurt to ask.(聞くだけ聞いても損はない)
- It couldn't hurt to bring a jacket.(上着を持っていっても損はない)
PATTERN 3
Just as ~, …(〜であるのと同じように、…)
Just as no one can imprison the wind, there isn't anybody who can stop my singing.
like ~ が口語のたとえなのに対し、Just as ~, … 前半にコンマを置き、後半に so を添えて Just as ~, so …
- Just as water finds its level, prices settle in time.(水が高さを合わせるように、価格もやがて落ち着く)
- Just as she predicted, the plan fell apart.(彼女が言ったとおり、計画は崩れた)
🎯 Today's Phrase
Native daily-use phrase
★ TODAY'S PHRASE
be in no position to ~
- You, of all people, are in no position to criticize me.
- I'm in no position to give anyone advice on money.
- We're in no position to turn down work right now.
You shouldn't say that. I'm in no position to judge.(とやかく言える立場ではありません)、We're in no position to turn down work right now.(いまは仕事を選べる立場ではない)。 紛らわしいのがbe in a position to ~。
