🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions |

01

give ~ a break

  • Seriously, give me a break.
  • Give him a break — it's only his second day.

02

take it out on ~

  • There's no need to take it out on the floor.
  • Sorry — I shouldn't have taken it out on you.

be angry が怒りなのに対し、take it out on ~ は矛先違い——相手に非が無いのが違い。

03

lose one's temper

  • I was the only one that was losing my temper in there!
  • He lost his temper over something tiny.

04

get worked up

  • I let myself get worked up by what was happening while everyone else was calm.
  • Don't get worked up before we know the facts.

work up が「かき立てる」。

05

do more harm than good

  • It'll only end up doing more harm than good.
  • Stepping in now would do more harm than good.

06

see it through

  • You already showed her you're a man, so you gotta see it through!
  • It's a long project, but I want to see it through.

see ~ through は「見届ける」。see it through to the end

07

do whatever it takes

  • I'm gonna do whatever it takes to make that old man concede the estate.
  • I'll do whatever it takes to finish by Friday.

08

hear ~ out

  • Come on, just hear me out.
  • Hear me out before you say no.

09

look out for ~

  • We were both just looking out for enemies, that's all.
  • Look out for potholes on that road.

10

know better than to ~

  • I really should've known better than to tell you all this.
  • You know better than to leave the door unlocked.

should have known better

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

PATTERN 1

Why don't you ~?(〜したらどうだ)

So, why don't you do us all a favor and tell us why you really came here today.

You should ~ が助言なのに対し、Why don't you ~? Why don't we ~?

PATTERN 2

I feel like + 主語 + 動詞(〜な気がする)

I feel like that makes you two friends.

PATTERN 3

I'm not really one to dance, not unless I feel compelled to.

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

give ~ a break

他人に向ければ「あの人を責めるな」——Give him a break, it's only his second day.(勘弁してやれよ、まだ二日目なんだから)のように、かばう言い方になります。

★★★★★ 5.0 / 5

見出しはgive ~ a break / take it out on ~ / do whatever it takes / get worked up / hear ~ out のように、怒りとその収め方を言う言い回しを中心に据えました。
