🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions |

01

as a last resort

  • I still haven't ruled out getting Reinhard to fight along with us as a last resort.
  • We'll move the deadline only as a last resort.

02

earn a title

  • While that is how I'm known, I am aware that I have not yet earned that title.
  • He earned the title the hard way.

03

an introduction is in order

  • Now, I believe an introduction is in order!
  • Before we start, an introduction is in order.

Let me introduce myself. An apology is in order.

04

one's undivided attention

  • Which can only mean I have the two of you to thank for their undivided attention!
  • You have my undivided attention.

You have my undivided attention.

05

take up ~'s time

  • I'm sorry for taking up your time.
  • I won't take up much of your time.

waste time が無駄なのに対し、take up ~'s time は占有——無駄とは限らないのが違い。 I won't take up much of your time.

06

render ~ unable to …

  • Rendering spirits and magic users unable to use their powers.
  • The outage rendered the system unable to process orders.

07

the very definition of ~

  • To this world, at least, he is the very definition of the word “different.”
  • That meeting was the very definition of a waste of time.

08

stand by with one's eyes closed

  • I won't stand by with my eyes closed while you get hurt doing it.
  • I can't stand by with my eyes closed and let this happen.

do nothing が不作為なのに対し、stand by with one's eyes closed は自分から見ないでいる——知らないふりをしているのが違い。stand by だけでも「傍観する」で、with one's eyes closed が重ねて強めています。

09

be wasted on ~

  • That wrath is completely wasted on you!
  • A wine like that is wasted on me.

10

be closer to ~ than …

  • This is spiritual interference, closer to a curse or hex than a true spell.
  • What he wrote is closer to a diary than a report.

is not ~ が否定なのに対し、be closer to ~ than …

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

PATTERN 1

Simply by + ~ing,

Simply by existing, he makes all of the mana surrounding him obey.

PATTERN 2

If only you'd chosen to use them for good instead of evil.

PATTERN 3

It is only natural that ~(〜するのは当然のことだ)

I'm the one who attacked first, so it's only natural that you'd be upset.

It is only natural that ~ は正当化——誰が見てもそうだと言っているのが違い。

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

as a last resort

re(また)+ sort(出向く)で、「最後に行き着く先」が元の絵です。 文末に置けば、ふつうの条件——We'll move the deadline as a last resort.only を足して文末に置くと、使う気のなさが出ます——only as a last resort(どうしてもというときだけ)。 紛らわしいのがin the last resort。

見出しはas a last resort / an introduction is in order / one's undivided attention / render ~ unable to …

Simply by + ~ing, 主語 + 動詞(ただ〜するだけで)、If only + 主語 + had + 過去分詞(〜してさえいたら)、It is only natural that ~(〜して当然だ)——手段を先に置く・惜しむ・認める型が並んでいます。

take up ~'s time / the very definition of ~ / Am I not even free to ~?
