04

change things up

  • So, I feel like changing things up and going for a run.

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

PATTERN 1

You can ~ all you want, but …(いくら〜しても、…)

You can tell me to leave all you want, but I won't.

I won't leave. You can ~ all you want, but … all you want が「好きなだけ」。

PATTERN 2

There's no reason for you to ~(〜する必要はない)

There's no reason for you to have that worried look on your face.

Don't worry. There's no reason for you to ~ は理由が無いと言う——気持ちを命令していないのが違い。for you to のあとは動詞の原形。

PATTERN 3

might as well + 動詞の原形(もう〜したほうがいい)

Subaru, you might as well give up on this now.

We might as well walk.(歩いたほうが早いね)のように、あきらめ半分の提案でよく使われます。

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

don't get carried away

Don't be excited. 自分についても、そのまま使えます——I got a bit carried away and bought three.(つい調子に乗って三つも買っちゃった)。 too を挟めば強められます——don't get too carried away(あまり調子に乗るなよ)。紛らわしいのがgo too far。

見出しはdon't get carried away / beat it / let ~ have it / change things up / jinx ~ のように、その場で口から出る短い言い回しを中心に据えました。

You can ~ all you want, but …(いくら〜しても)、There's no reason for you to ~(〜する必要はない)、might as well + 動詞の原形(もう〜したほうがいい)——受けてから返す・理由ごと取り除く・消去法で勧める型が並んでいます。You can ~ all you want, but …
