🎯 Grammar Patterns
3 patterns
第53話の実際のセリフから、書き言葉でも通用する上級構文を3つ。
PATTERN 1
It follows that ~(ゆえに〜ということになる)
You have that right, of course, everyone does. But it follows that I now have the right to pay you back in kind!
むろんその権利はある。誰にでもね。だがゆえに、私にも同じだけ返す権利があることになる。
前に述べたことから、当然こうなる——と筋をつなぐ形です。So ~ が話し言葉のつなぎなのに対し、It follows that ~ は論の運び——結論が前提から導かれていると示すのが違い。follow が「後に続く・帰結する」。It does not follow that ~ なら「そうとはかぎらない」と、飛躍を突く言い方になります。
他にも使える例:
- It follows that the cost will rise.(ゆえに費用は上がることになります)
- It does not follow that she agreed.(だからといって同意したことにはなりません)
PATTERN 2
Granted, ~(なるほど〜ではあるが)
Granted, I know you're messed in the head, so I do grant you some grace.
なるほど、君の頭がどうかしているのは分かっている。だからいくらか大目に見てはいるんだ。
相手の言い分をいったん認めてから、自分の話に入る形です。Although ~ が従属節なのに対し、Granted, ~ は一語で置ける——文頭にコンマだけで成立するのが違い。Granted, ~, but … とbut で受けるのが定番で、議論を公平に見せる効果があります。
他にも使える例:
- Granted, it's expensive, but it lasts.(なるほど高いけれど、長持ちします)
- Granted, we were late. Even so, the door was locked.(確かに遅れました。とはいえ鍵は閉まっていました)
PATTERN 3
not so much as + 動詞の原形(〜すらしない)
When I very nervously stole something of his, he didn't so much as scold me!
おそるおそる彼のものを盗んだときでさえ、あの方は叱りもしなかったの。
いちばん小さなことすらしなかった——と強く否定する形です。didn't scold me が単なる否定なのに対し、didn't so much as scold me は下限の否定——それ以上のことは言うまでもないのが違い。so much as のあとは動詞の原形。without so much as ~ing の形も多く、「〜さえせずに」となります。
他にも使える例:
- He left without so much as saying goodbye.(別れも言わずに帰ってしまった)
- She didn't so much as glance at the menu.(メニューに目もくれなかった)
🎯 Today's Phrase
Native daily-use phrase
★ TODAY'S PHRASE
none other than ~
「ほかでもない〜」
- The thing they caught with that big trap was none other than one of the Witches of Sin.
- The speaker turned out to be none other than her old teacher.
- The letter was signed by none other than the founder.
⭐ プリステラという街が何を捕らえるための罠だったのか——クルシュがその答えを明かす場面の一言です。もったいぶって正体を明かすときの決まった形です。It was one of the Witches of Sin. と言えば、事実だけが伝わります。none other than ~ を挟むと、そこに「まさかの」が乗る——聞き手が驚くことを、話し手が分かっているところが違います。直訳すると「〜以外の何ものでもない」。候補を全部つぶしてから一つだけ残す、という言い方です。置く場所は決まっています——be動詞のあと、または前置詞のあと。was none other than ~、signed by none other than ~ のように使います。人に使うのがいちばん多いですが、物や場所にも使えます。紹介文や記事の書き出しで効きます——名前を先に言わずに引っぱれるので、スピーチの登壇者紹介にもそのまま使えます。紛らわしいのがno less than ~。こちらは数や量が「〜も」と多いことを言う形——no less than 300 people(300人もの人)。正体なら none other than、数なら no less than と分けると混ざりません。
