💡 そんなに汗をかくほどのことじゃない——という形です。Don't worry. がふつうの慰めなのに対し、Don't sweat it. は軽さが前面——相手の気負いを笑い飛ばしているのが違い。sweat が「汗をかく=気をもむ」。親しい相手向けで、目上には Don't worry about it. のほうが無難です。

意味強がってみせる

  • You don't need to put on a tough act with me.
  • He put on a tough act, but his hands were shaking.

💡 本当は平気ではないのに、平気なふりをする形です。be brave が実際の勇気なのに対し、put on a tough act は演技——中身と外見が食い違っているのが違い。put on が「身につける・装う」。act は「芝居」で、put on an act だけでも通じます。

take ~'s word for it

意味〜の言葉を信じる

  • All right, but I'm taking your word for it.
  • I've never been there, so I'll take your word for it.

💡 確かめずに、相手の言うとおりだと受け取る形です。believe ~ が信じるのに対し、take ~'s word for it は証拠なしで受け入れる——確かめる手立てが無いのが違い。Take my word for it. なら「わたしを信じて」と、自分から保証する形になります。

can't just ~

意味〜するわけにはいかない

  • I can't just go knock on her door!
  • We can't just ignore the deadline.

💡 そう簡単にはできない——と押し返す形です。can't ~ が不可能なのに対し、can't just ~ は「軽々しくは」——やろうと思えばできるのが違い。just が「そのまま・あっさり」。相手の提案が乱暴に思えたときの返しにちょうどよい言い方です。

意味足りないところを埋める

  • Not that much, but I'm hoping maybe you can fill in the blanks.
  • I know the outline — can you fill in the blanks?

💡 分かっていない部分を、人に埋めてもらう形です。explain が説明なのに対し、fill in the blanks は補完——だいたいは分かっている前提があるのが違い。穴埋め問題の絵から来ていて、会議でも取材でもそのまま使えます。

意味感傷的になる

  • I must look pretty pathetic getting all sentimental over food.
  • I get all sentimental every time I hear that song.

💡 思い出や気分に引っぱられて、しんみりする形です。be sad が悲しみなのに対し、get all sentimental は甘く湿った感情——自分でも照れているのが違い。all が「すっかり」。自嘲まじりで使うのがふつうです。

意味〜に飲み込まれる・流される

  • Now you're all swept up in your feelings.
  • The whole town got swept up in the excitement.

💡 波にさらわれるように、その中へ持っていかれる形です。be interested が関心なのに対し、be swept up in ~ は巻き込まれ——自分では止められないのが違い。sweep が「掃く・さらう」。feelings / excitement / the moment とよく組みます。

意味何としてでも

  • Don't you worry about your family one bit, because I'm gonna find them, if it's the last thing I do!
  • I'll get this finished, if it's the last thing I do.

💡 これだけは必ずやる——と誓う形です。I promise が約束なのに対し、if it's the last thing I do は覚悟——ほかを全部投げてもやるのが違い。直訳は「たとえそれが最後の行いになろうとも」。大げさな言い方なので、軽い場面では冗談になります。

ditch ~

意味〜を置いて行く・見捨てる

  • I'm pretty sure she ditched us because raising triplets seemed like too much work.
  • They ditched the plan halfway through.

💡 いらなくなったものを、そこに捨てていく形です。leave が離れるのに対し、ditch ~ は投げ出す——相手への配慮が無いのが違い。ditch が「溝」で、溝に放り込む絵から来ています。ditch class なら「授業をさぼる」。

意味その呼び名が定着した

  • I took a chance and called her “Reala.” I suppose she liked it because it stuck.
  • Someone called him Tiny once, and the name stuck.

💡 仮につけた呼び名が、そのまま残る形です。was named が命名なのに対し、the name stuck は定着——誰も決めていないのに残ったのが違い。stick が「くっついて離れない」。あだ名・店の通称・言い回しと、広く使えます。

PATTERN 1

It's not like + 主語 + 動詞(〜ってわけじゃない)

Yeah, well, it's not like I asked you to tag along, now, did I?

相手が思っていそうなことを、先回りして打ち消す形です。I didn't ask you. がただの否定なのに対し、It's not like ~ は思い込みを否定する——「そう思ってるだろうけど違う」という含みが出るのが違い。like のあとは文がまるごと入ります。照れ隠しや言い訳にちょうどよく、会話でとてもよく出ます。

What's the point in ~ing?(〜して何になる)

Honestly, what's the point in even wondering, what difference does it make?

やっても意味が無い、と問いの形で突き放す言い方です。It's useless. が断定なのに対し、What's the point in ~ing? は問いかけ——答えが無いことを分かって聞いているのが違い。in のあとは ~ing。in を落として What's the point of ~ing? でも同じように使えます。

期待せずに、遠慮がちに尋ねる形です。Have you seen ~? がふつうの質問なのに対し、I don't suppose ~ は半ばあきらめている——断られる前提で聞いているのが違い。否定で始めて、最後に have you? を添えるのが型。頼みごとにも使えて、相手が断りやすくなります。

⭐ 子どもを助けたことに礼を言われたガーフィールが、照れ隠しに返した一言です。そんなに汗をかくほどのことじゃない——という形です。Don't worry. がふつうの慰めなのに対し、Don't sweat it. は軽さが前に出ます——相手の気負いを、笑って引き取っているところが違います。sweat が「汗をかく」から「気をもむ」へ。it は「そのこと」で、言い換えません。使いどころは二つあります。ひとつは、礼を言われたとき——「たいしたことしてないよ」と受け流せます。もうひとつは、相手が謝ってきたとき——You forgot the file?
