🔥 Must-Know Expressions
10 expressions |
01
dance around the issue
- We can stop dancing around the issue.
- Let's stop dancing around the issue and talk about the budget.
02
a closely-guarded secret
- The location of the witch's remains is a closely-guarded secret.
- The recipe is a closely-guarded secret.
- Although records on the matter are spotty at best.
- The data for that period is spotty at best.
- And they're true, with one caveat.
- I agree, with one caveat: we start on Monday.
- It is said that she was beautiful and intelligent, but also ruthless and cunning beyond measure.
- Their patience was tested beyond measure.
06
haven't a moment to spare
- The rumors are true and we haven't a moment to spare.
- We haven't a moment to spare if we want to catch the last train.
be busy が多忙なのに対し、haven't a moment to spare は締め切りの切迫——余白がゼロなのが違い。
- The witch's remains are imbued with a special power.
- The building is imbued with a sense of history.
- You were instrumental in our battle with Sloth.
- She was instrumental in getting the project approved.
09
retain one's composure
- I'm not certain I could retain my composure.
- She retained her composure throughout the interview.
- Much obliged for the distraction.
- Much obliged — I'll take it from here.
Thank you. I am much obliged to you.

🎯 Grammar Patterns
3 patterns
PATTERN 1
Much as 主語 + would like to ~, …(〜したいのはやまやまだが)
Much as I'd like to sit this one out, we can't afford it.
I'd like to ~, but … Much as のあとは主語+would like to。Much as I respect him, ~ のように動詞を替えても使えます。
- Much as I'd like to help, my hands are tied.(手を貸したいのはやまやまですが、動けません)
- Much as I love the city, I couldn't live there.(好きな街ですが、住むのは無理です)
PATTERN 2
In spite of ~, …(〜にもかかわらず)
In spite of your bandages, you're walking just fine.
- In spite of the rain, the event went ahead.(雨にもかかわらず、催しは行われた)
- In spite of everything, she kept smiling.(何もかもあっても、彼女は笑っていた)
PATTERN 3
There is no way to + 動詞の原形(〜する術がない)
Believe me when I tell you that there is no way to move them.
There is no way to ~ は手段の否定——誰がやっても無理だと広げているのが違い。 There is no way + 主語 + 動詞 だと「〜するはずがない」と、意味が変わります。
- There is no way to undo it.(元に戻す術はありません)
- There is no way to know in advance.(前もって知る方法はありません)

Native daily-use phrase
★ TODAY'S PHRASE
dance around the issue
- The rumors are true and we haven't a moment to spare. We can stop dancing around the issue.
- Let's stop dancing around the issue and talk about the budget.
- He danced around the issue for twenty minutes.
He danced around the issue for twenty minutes.(彼は二十分、核心を避けて話し続けた)。issue のところは入れ替えられます——dance around the question / the subject / the truth。
