意味〜のなすがままである

  • This city is under their control now. We're completely at the mercy of the Witch's Cult.
  • Small farms are at the mercy of the weather.

💡 相手の出方ひとつで、どうにでもなってしまう形です。be controlled by ~ が支配なのに対し、be at the mercy of ~ は情け次第——相手が手加減するかどうかにかかっているのが違い。mercy が「慈悲」。天候・相場・他人の都合と、こちらが手出しできないものに広く使えます。

意味不幸中の幸い

  • There is a silver lining to all this, because the watergate closed again.
  • The delay had a silver lining — we caught the error.

💡 悪いことの中に、ひとつだけ良い面があるという形です。good news が朗報なのに対し、a silver lining は悪い出来事が前提——全体は依然として悪いのが違い。黒雲のふちが銀色に光る絵から来ていて、Every cloud has a silver lining. ということわざが元です。

be oblivious to ~

意味〜に気づいていない

  • But it would appear you're oblivious to that.
  • He was oblivious to the tension in the room.

💡 すぐそばで起きているのに、本人だけ知らない形です。not know が単に知らないのに対し、be oblivious to ~ は無自覚——気づくべき場にいたのが違い。oblivion(忘却)と同じ語源。責める言い方にも、微笑ましい描写にも使えます。

be purported to be ~

意味〜とされている

  • Along with the witch's remains, which are purported to be in this city.
  • The document is purported to be an early draft.

💡 そう言われてはいるが、確かめられていない形です。be said to be ~ が伝聞なのに対し、be purported to be ~ は疑いを含む——書き手が保証していないのが違い。purport が「主張する」。報道と法律の文章で、断定を避けるために使われます。

run rampant

意味はびこる・野放しになる

  • Look out for those demi-beasts that now run rampant in this city.
  • Rumours ran rampant for weeks.

💡 止める者がなく、好きなだけ広がる形です。spread が拡散なのに対し、run rampant は制御の不在——誰も抑えていないのが違い。rampant はもともと紋章の「後ろ足で立つ獅子」。病・噂・犯罪と組みます。

perform one's last rites

意味引導を渡す

  • I'm prepared to be merciful and perform your last rites!
  • The priest performed the last rites at dawn.

💡 最期を看取る儀式をおこなう——という形です。kill が殺すのに対し、perform one's last rites は儀式として送る——敬意の形を取っているのが違い。rites が「儀式」。プリシラのように皮肉として使うと、ひときわ冷たく響きます。

throw ~ into chaos

意味〜を混乱に陥れる

  • It can throw people's emotions into complete chaos.
  • One cancelled flight threw the whole schedule into chaos.

💡 整っていたものを、一気に崩す形です。confuse ~ が戸惑わせるのに対し、throw ~ into chaos は秩序の崩壊——規模が大きいのが違い。throw ~ into + 名詞の型は応用がきき、throw ~ into doubt / disarray / panic もそのまま使えます。

befit ~

意味〜にふさわしい

  • You don't look happy, and that doesn't befit one so lovely.
  • A quiet ceremony would better befit the occasion.

💡 その立場や場面に、似つかわしいという形です。suit ~ が似合うのに対し、befit ~ は格にかなう——見た目ではなく立場の話なのが違い。as befits ~(〜にふさわしく)の形で挿入句としても使われ、弔辞や式辞によく出ます。

mince words

意味言葉を濁す

  • People are going to end up dying. In this case, I think it's cowardly to mince words.
  • He doesn't mince words about the risks.

💡 角が立たないように、言い方を刻んで薄める形です。be polite が丁寧なのに対し、mince words は言い逃れ寄り——はっきり言うべき場面が前提なのが違い。mince は「細かく刻む」。否定形 not mince words がいちばんよく使われ、褒め言葉になります。

be a lost cause

意味もう望みがない

  • Some shelters are a lost cause.
  • My handwriting is a lost cause.

💡 手を尽くしても、もう戻らない形です。be difficult が困難なのに対し、be a lost cause は見込みゼロ——あきらめの宣言なのが違い。cause が「大義・目的」で、もとは「敗れた運動」。自分について冗談で使うこともできます。

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

第56話の実際のセリフから、書き言葉でも通用する上級構文を3つ。

PATTERN 1

Along with ~, …(〜に加えて)

Along with the witch's remains, the artificial spirit and the Tome of Wisdom have joined the list.

もともとあったものに、さらに並べて足す形です。and ~ がただの並列なのに対し、Along with ~ は先にあったものを立てる——追加だとはっきりするのが違い。文頭に置いてコンマで区切るのが型。Along with のあとは名詞で、動詞は後ろの主語に合わせます——ここが試験でよく問われるところです。

There's a distinct possibility that the Witch's Cult doesn't know they were destroyed.

ありうる、と落ち着いて見積もる形です。maybe ~ が当てずっぽうなのに対し、a distinct possibility は根拠のある見積もり——distinct が「はっきりした」のが違い。strong / real / slim に入れ替えれば確からしさの度合いを調整できます。会議で断定を避けつつ警告するのに向きます。

I am Emilia's knight and I'm prepared to go and fight for her.

いつでもそうする用意があると示す形です。will ~ が意志なのに対し、be prepared to ~ は覚悟——代償を承知しているのが違い。be ready to ~ より重い言い方で、交渉では「そこまでは応じる」という線引きを示すのにも使えます。

⭐ 街がすでに魔女教の手に落ちていることを、184がエミリアに告げた一言です。相手の出方ひとつで、こちらはどうにでもなってしまう——という形です。be controlled by ~ が「支配されている」と力関係だけを言うのに対し、be at the mercy of ~ は情け次第——相手が手加減してくれるかどうかにかかっているところが違います。mercy は「慈悲」。こちらに打つ手が無く、相手の気分に委ねるしかない、という絵がそのまま意味になっています。相手は人でなくてかまいません——むしろ、人以外に使うほうが日常では多いくらいです。at the mercy of the weather(天候次第)、at the mercy of the timetable(時刻表に振り回される)、at the mercy of the market(相場任せ)。「自分ではどうにもできない」と言いたいときに、ひとことで収まります。逆の形もあります——have someone at your mercy(相手を意のままにできる)。紛らわしいのがdepend on ~。こちらは中立で、頼りにしているだけ——at the mercy of ~ には「不本意ながら」が必ず入ります。自分で選べないなら at the mercy of、と覚えると混ざりません。
