🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

第56話の実際のセリフから、中級で押さえたい文法を3つ。

PATTERN 1

It's not about whether ~, it's about whether …(〜かどうかではなく、…かどうかだ)

It's not about whether I can or can't! It's about whether I will or won't!

問いの立て方そのものを、置き換える形です。I will do it. と言い切るのに対し、It's not about ~, it's about … は論点を移す——相手の前提を外しているのが違い。whether のあとは主語+動詞。whether A or B の形にすると、作中のように対句で決まります。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 2

Keep ~ing and I'll …(〜し続けたら…するぞ)

Keep spacing out and I'll leave you behind.

命令文のあとに and を置いて、結果を予告する形です。If you keep ~ing, I'll … が条件文なのに対し、命令文 + and は短く鋭い——脅しや警告に向くのが違い。命令文 + or にすると「〜しないと…だぞ」と、向きが逆になります。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 3

How long do you plan on ~ing?(いつまで〜するつもりだ)

How long do you plan on keeping that ridiculous expression on your face?

もうやめろ、と問いの形で促す言い方です。Stop it. が命令なのに対し、How long do you plan on ~ing? は呆れ——答えを求めていないのが違い。plan on のあとは ~ing——plan to + 動詞の原形との使い分けがよく問われます。

他にも使える例:

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

by the skin of one's teeth

⭐ 大水を生き延びた昴が、再会したエミリアに返した一言です。あと少しで駄目だった——というきわどさを言う形です。barely が「かろうじて」と程度だけを言うのに対し、by the skin of one's teeth は極限のきわどさ——紙一重だった、という実感がこもるところが違います。面白いのは、この表現の理屈です。歯に皮膚は無い——つまり「厚みゼロの差で助かった」ということ。旧約聖書のヨブ記が出どころで、そのまま英語に残りました。語順と前置詞は固定です——by the skin of my / your / his teeth。teeth は必ず複数で、tooth とは言いません。使いどころは広く、試験・電車・締め切り・事故——間に合った、助かった、受かったのどれにも使えます。紛らわしいのがjust in time。こちらは「ぎりぎり間に合った」で、時間の話だけ——危なかったという気持ちまで込めたいときは by the skin of one's teeth、と分けると使い分けが見えてきます。

★★★★★ 5.0 / 5

第56話は「騎士の条件」。水に流された街で目を覚ました昴が、プリシラに連れ回されて惨状を見ます。中級版はその「立ち直りの英語」に絞りました。

見出しはby the skin of one's teeth / shake in one's boots / this time around / return to one's senses / join up with ~ のように、ぎりぎりのところを言う言い回しを中心に据えました。語彙は riot / glow / senses / debts / busted のような混乱の語で揃えています。

この回でとくに効くのは、論点を動かす英語です。It's not about whether ~, it's about whether …(〜かどうかではなく、…かどうかだ)、Keep ~ing and I'll …(〜し続けたら…するぞ)、How long do you plan on ~ing?(いつまで〜するつもりだ)——前提を外す・結果を予告する・呆れて促す型が並んでいます。It's not about ~, it's about … は、議論の向きを変えられます。

総合難易度:★★★☆☆(会話の言い回しが中心)/英語学習価値:★★★★★(今日そのまま言える形が揃っています)/おすすめ度:★★★★★。pick a fight with ~ / be swallowed up / wash ~ away まで扱う、リゼロ第56話「騎士の条件」の中級版です。
