🎯 Grammar Patterns
3 patterns
第57話の実際のセリフから、書き言葉でも通用する上級構文を3つ。
PATTERN 1
What + 主語 + 動詞 + is …(〜なのは…だ)
What you want is the kind of hope that'll come boiling up all at once.
あなたが欲しいのは、一気に湧き上がってくるような希望でしょう。
言いたいところを先に囲って、あとで中身を置く形です。You want hope. と言い切るのに対し、What ~ is … は焦点を作る——「ほかでもなくこれだ」と強まるのが違い。この What は関係代名詞で、「〜すること・もの」をひとまとめにします。説明や提案の書き出しにとても便利です。
他にも使える例:
- What matters is the deadline.(大事なのは締め切りです)
- What I need is one more day.(必要なのは、あと一日だけです)
PATTERN 2
one must + 動詞の原形(〜せねばならない)
I do understand what you're saying, that one must press on and never give up.
おっしゃることは分かります。進み続け、決してあきらめてはならないと。
誰にでも当てはまる決まりとして言う形です。you must ~ が相手への指示なのに対し、one must ~ は一般論——名指ししていないのが違い。one は「人というもの」を指す代名詞。硬い書き言葉で、説教くささを避けたいときに効きます。
他にも使える例:
- One must choose one's words carefully.(言葉は慎重に選ばねばならない)
- One must start somewhere.(どこかから始めるほかない)
PATTERN 3
That being said, ~(とはいえ)
That being said I'll be listening closely to each word.
とはいえ、ひと言ひと言、しっかり聞かせてもらいます。
直前に言ったことを、認めたまま向きを変える形です。But ~ が単なる逆接なのに対し、That being said, ~ はいったん受けてから返す——前の発言を否定しないのが違い。That being said は分詞構文で、Having said that もほぼ同じ。異を唱えるときの前置きに向きます。
他にも使える例:
- That being said, the deadline hasn't moved.(とはいえ、期限は動いていません)
- That being said, I'd still like to try.(とはいえ、やってみたいと思っています)
🎯 Today's Phrase
Native daily-use phrase
★ TODAY'S PHRASE
be at one's wit's end
「なすすべもない」
- It sorta feels like I'm at my wit's end.
- After three failed attempts, I was at my wit's end.
- The parents were at their wit's end.
紛らわしいのがat the end of my rope。こちらは我慢の限界で、怒りや疲れが前に出ます——知恵が尽きたなら wit's end、忍耐が尽きたなら end of one's rope と分けると混ざりません。
