🔥 Must-Know Expressions 10 expressions | 各解説つき

〈中級〉第58話のクルシュとのやりとり、フェリスの悔い、リリアナとのやりとり、そして役割の割り振りから、そのまま使える言い方を10個。すべて作中で実際に話されている英語です。

01

push oneself

意味無理をする

  • Subaru. Don't let her push herself.
  • You've been up since five — don't push yourself.

💡 自分の限度を越えて、押して進む形です。try hard が努力なのに対し、push oneself は押しすぎ——無理が入っているのが違い。push が「押す」。自分の背中を自分で押しているという絵です。Don't push yourself. で「無理しないで」がそのまま言えます。

02

get some rest

意味少し休む

  • Don't worry, get some rest, that's what's most important.
  • Call me tomorrow — get some rest tonight.

💡 まとめて休みを取る形です。sleep が眠ることなのに対し、get some rest は休息そのもの——眠るかどうかは問わないのが違い。rest は数えない名詞なので、a rest ではなく some rest。見舞いでも、残業明けでも使えます。

03

go up against ~

意味〜に立ち向かう

  • You aren't seriously planning to go up against the Witch's Cult, right?
  • We're going up against the market leader.

💡 格上の相手に、正面から向かう形です。fight が戦うなのに対し、go up against ~ は挑む側——相手のほうが強い前提があるのが違い。up が「上に向かって」。試合でも入札でも使えます。

04

end up with ~

意味結局〜を手にする

  • How'd you end up with that thing?
  • I ended up with two copies of the same book.

💡 思っていた筋道とは別に、最後にそれが残る形です。get が入手なのに対し、end up with ~ は結末——そうなるつもりではなかったのが違い。end up ~ing なら「結局〜する」。よい結果にも、困った結果にも使えます。

05

go into ~

意味〜に立ち入って話す

  • But having said that, I won't go into how I got it.
  • I won't go into the details here.

06

top priority

意味最優先

  • Overtaking those towers is our top priority.
  • Safety is our top priority on this site.

💡 並んでいるもののうち、いちばん上に置く形です。important が大事なのに対し、top priority は順位——ほかを後ろに下げているのが違い。priority は順位のことなので、top priorities と複数にすると意味が薄れます。

07

spare ~

意味〜を割く

  • So, we can't spare anybody on that front.
  • Can you spare ten minutes this afternoon?

💡 手元から切り分けて、よそに回す形です。give が渡すなのに対し、spare は余裕から出す——足りるかどうかが前提なのが違い。人・時間・一枚と組むのが定番で、Can you spare ~? は頼みごとの型です。

08

be well aware

意味よく分かっている

  • C'mon, man, don't say that. — Trust me, I'm well aware.
  • We're well aware of the risk.

09

no guarantee

意味保証はない

  • But there's no guarantee.
  • There's no guarantee the parts arrive by Friday.

💡 そうなると約束できるものは何もない形です。maybe が可能性なのに対し、no guarantee は約束の不在——責任の話になっているのが違い。There's no guarantee (that) ~ の形で、見込みを語ったあとの注意書きに使います。

10

single ~ out

意味〜だけを名指しする

  • Why do you keep singling me out like that?
  • Don't single out one team in the report.

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

第58話の実際のセリフから、中級で押さえたい文法を3つ。

PATTERN 1

what it takes to + 動詞の原形(〜するのに必要なもの)

I want you to take on Greed with me because we've got what it takes to bring him down.

必要な力や条件を、ひとまとめに指す形です。be able to ~ が能力なのに対し、have what it takes は資格込み——中身を細かく言わないのが違い。what は「もの」をまとめる関係代名詞で、it takes ~ が「〜が必要だ」。面接でも推薦状でも出てきます。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 2

be happy to + 動詞の原形(よろしければ〜します)

Ricardo and I will be happy to take care of him.

進んで引き受けると、やわらかく申し出る形です。I will ~ が予定の宣言なのに対し、be happy to ~ は快諾——気持ちのよさが前に出るのが違い。happy は「嬉しい」だけではない——「構いません」に近い使い方があります。メールの返信で使い勝手がよい形です。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 3

That leaves ~(残るのは〜)

That leaves Felix and I, who'll remain here in the government office.

割り振ったあとに、残りを確認する形です。And we will stay. が並べるだけなのに対し、That leaves ~ は差し引きの結果——ほかが決まったことが前提なのが違い。leave が「あとに残す」。That leaves two seats / Friday と、段取りの詰めでそのまま使えます。

他にも使える例:

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

push oneself

紛らわしいのがpush someone(人を押す)。oneself が無いと、相手を急かす意味になってしまいます——自分のことなら必ず yourself / himself を置くこと。
