Episode Summary

💡 隠していた中身が、とうとう表に出る形です。be rude が態度なのに対し、show one's true colors は正体——それまで隠れていたのが違い。もとは船が掲げる旗の色。偽の旗を下ろして本当の旗を出すという絵です。たいてい悪いほうに使います。

write ~ off as …

意味〜を…として片づける

  • I will not have you write it off as something insignificant!
  • Don't write the idea off as too expensive yet.

💡 検討を打ち切って、価値なしと決める形です。ignore が無視なのに対し、write ~ off as … は見切り——帳簿から消すという手つきが違い。もとは会計の「償却する」。案・人・損のどれにも使えます。

fly into a rage

意味激しく怒り出す

  • You heard something unpleasant to you then flew into a rage.
  • He flew into a rage over a missing file.

💡 ひと息に、激しい怒りへ移る形です。get angry が変化なのに対し、fly into a rage は飛び込む速さ——間がないのが違い。fly into ~ が「勢いよく入る」。rage は「激しい怒り」なので、小さな苛立ちには使いません。

lavish ~ with …

意味〜に…を惜しみなく与える

  • Every one of them did their best to lavish me with magnificent presents.
  • The review lavished the cast with praise.

💡 ありあまるほど、注ぎ込む形です。give が贈与なのに対し、lavish ~ with … は量の過剰——度を越しているのが違い。lavish は形容詞でも「ぜいたくな」。praise / gifts / attention と組むのが定番です。

go unrewarded

意味報われずに終わる

  • Therefore, I won't let her efforts go unrewarded!
  • Her years on the project did not go unrewarded.

💡 働きに見返りがないまま終わる形です。not be paid が支払いの話なのに対し、go unrewarded は報いの不在——価値は認めているのが違い。go + 過去分詞で「〜されないままになる」——go unnoticed / go unanswered も同じ形です。

意味値打ちを示す

  • In this case, she's proven her worth.
  • The cheaper model proved its worth in a week.

💡 言葉ではなく、結果で示す形です。be good が評価なのに対し、prove one's worth は証明——疑われていた前提があるのが違い。worth は「値打ち」。人にも、道具や制度にも使えます。

意味高い代償を伴う

  • You should know that breaking my necklace comes at a very high price.
  • That shortcut came at a high price.

💡 手に入るが、払うものが大きい形です。be expensive が値段なのに対し、come at a high price は代償——金でないこともあるのが違い。at が「その値で」。come at a cost も同じ形で使えます。

意味好きなときに・ゆっくりと

  • Fighting with you can be done at my leisure.
  • Please look it over at your leisure.

💡 急かされず、自分の間合いでやる形です。slowly が速さなのに対し、at one's leisure は主導権——いつやるかを自分が決めるのが違い。leisure は「余暇・ゆとり」。書類を渡すときの一言としても便利です。

意味〜を哀れに思う

  • I know you must have pity for this sweet little girl.
  • You could hear the pity for her in his voice.

💡 弱い立場の相手を、痛ましく思う形です。feel sorry for ~ が同情なのに対し、have pity for ~ は見下ろす位置——上から見ている色が混ざるのが違い。pity は名詞で「哀れみ」。言われた側は喜ばないことが多いので、使うときは相手を選ぶこと。

意味衝動に負ける

  • I would never even dream of surrendering to such an impulse!
  • I surrendered to the impulse and bought it.

💡 こらえきれず、その場の衝動に明け渡す形です。do it anyway が行動なのに対し、surrender to ~ は降参——こらえていたのが違い。surrender が「明け渡す」。impulse / temptation / pressure と組みます。

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

第61話の実際のセリフから、書き言葉でも通用する上級構文を3つ。

PATTERN 1

It can only be described as ~(〜としか言いようがない)

It can only be described as negligence.

言い換えの余地がない、と断じる形です。It is ~ が普通の断定なのに対し、It can only be described as ~ は唯一の言い方——ほかの呼び名を閉じているのが違い。describe ~ as … が「〜を…と言い表す」。受け身で使うのがこの型で、評価・監査・批評でよく出ます。褒めるほうにも使えます。

Don't presume to + 動詞の原形(〜しようなどと思うな)

Don't presume to comment on the things I do.

そこまでの立場にない、と退ける形です。Don't comment. が禁止なのに対し、Don't presume to ~ は分をわきまえよ——資格の話にしているのが違い。presume は「出過ぎたことをする」。かなり強い言い方なので、読み取れれば十分で、使う場面は限られます。

自分の話を先に片づけて、本題へ移す形です。Not counting me が算入の話なのに対し、Myself aside は話題の整理——後ろが本論だと示すのが違い。aside は「脇に置いて」。Joking aside / That aside と、前を名詞に替えて使い回せます。

⭐ 取り乱した相手を見て、プリシラが静かに置いた一言です。隠していた中身が、とうとう表に出る——という形です。be rude が「無礼だ」と、その場の態度を言うのに対し、show one's true colors は正体のほう——それまで見えていなかったところが違います。もとは船が掲げる旗の色。偽の旗で近づいて、間際で本当の旗に替える——その動きから来た言い方です。だから「見せた」側には、隠していた時間がある。出会ってすぐの人には使いません。使いどころは、人柄が試される場面のあと——締め切り・事故・金の話で出やすく、たいてい悪いほうに傾きます。よいほうで使うなら、show what one is made of(地金を見せる)のほうが自然です。紛らわしいのがshow one's hand(手の内を見せる)。こちらは手札=意図の話で、人柄ではありません——人柄なら true colors、手の内なら hand と分けると混ざりません。
