🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

第62話の実際のセリフから、書き言葉でも通用する上級構文を3つ。

PATTERN 1

Say what you want about ~, but …(〜については何と言われても構わないが)

Say what you want about me, but I would never miscount people's lives.

批判を一つ呑んでから、譲れない一点を出す形です。I don't care が拒絶なのに対し、Say what you want about ~, but … は受けてから返す——一歩も引いていないのが違い。Say は命令形で「言いたければ言え」。but のあとに本題を置きます。反論の切り出しとして品がよい言い方です。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 2

Surely, you must realize ~(よもやお分かりでないわけはない)

Surely, you must realize what it means?

分かっているはずだ、と押し付ける形です。Do you understand? が質問なのに対し、Surely, you must realize ~ は前提——知らないとは言わせないのが違い。Surely が「まさか〜でないはずだ」。must は義務ではなく推量で、「〜に違いない」のほうです。詰めるときに効きますが、角は立ちます。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 3

If this had been ~, I would have …(もし〜であったなら…していた)

If this had been a real duel, I would have withdrawn my sword.

起きなかったことを、仮に置いて言う形です。If this was ~ が現在の仮定なのに対し、If this had been ~ は過去の仮定——もう終わった話なのが違い。前が had + 過去分詞、後ろが would have + 過去分詞。二つそろえるのが要点で、振り返りや反省の文でよく使います。

他にも使える例:

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

piece ~ together

piece together the story とpiece the story together はどちらも正しく、it のときだけpiece it together と間に挟むのが決まりです。紛らわしいのがput two and two together。こちらは二つの事実から一気に察することで、材料が少ないぶん、ひらめき寄り——手間をかけて並べたなら piece together、ぴんと来たなら put two and two together と分けると混ざりません。

★★★★★ 5.0 / 5

第62話は「レグルス・コルニアス」。勝負を決めたのは敵との交渉ではなく、利用されていた側との交渉で、その糸口は「名前を尋ねる」ことでした。上級版はレグルスの弁解と決着のやりとりに絞りました。

見出しはpiece ~ together / be in the dark / spell it out / look down one's nose at ~ / at one's expense のように、突き止めと見下しの言い回しを中心に据えました。語彙は whatsoever / refinement / dullard / condolences / infuriating のような弁解と侮りの語で揃えています。

この回でとくに効くのは、受けてから押し返す英語です。Say what you want about ~, but …(何と言われても構わないが)、Surely, you must realize ~(よもやお分かりでないわけはない)、If this had been ~, I would have …(もし〜であったなら…していた)——批判を呑む・前提として押す・過去を仮に置く型が並んでいます。仮定法過去完了は前後をそろえるのが要点です。

総合難易度:★★★★★(弁解と決着の英語が中心)/英語学習価値:★★★★★(反論の切り出しが身につきます)/おすすめ度:★★★★★。strip ~ of … / gang up on ~ / This will not stand! まで扱う、リゼロ第62話「レグルス・コルニアス」の上級版です。
