意味〜と共通するところがある

  • A half-elf who's very different from you, but also has things in common with you.
  • We had more in common than I expected.

💡 違うところはあっても、重なる点がある形です。be the same が同一なのに対し、have things in common は部分の一致——違いを認めたうえなのが違い。have a lot in common なら「気が合う」に近い意味。自己紹介でそのまま使えます。

be brought up

意味育てられる

  • From our circumstances to where we were brought up, even our roots aren't the same.
  • He was brought up by his grandparents.

💡 育った場所や育て方を言う形です。grow up が自分で育つのに対し、be brought up は育てられる側——誰かの手が入っているのが違い。bring up が「育てる」。話題を持ち出す bring up と同じ形なので、文で見分けます。

ask for a favor

意味頼みごとをする

  • So, it seems a little selfish of me to ask for a favor, now doesn't it?
  • Can I ask for a favor before you go?

💡 相手の手を借りたいと申し出る形です。ask が質問なのに対し、ask for a favor は依頼——相手の手間をもらうのが違い。favor は「好意」。Could I ask you a favor? の形もまったく同じように使えます。

come to mind

意味思い浮かぶ

  • Is anything coming to mind?
  • One name comes to mind.

💡 向こうから頭に浮かんでくる形です。remember が思い出す努力なのに対し、come to mind は自然と浮かぶ——主語が思い出される側なのが違い。nothing comes to mind で「何も浮かびません」——会議でそのまま使えます。

go through the trouble of ~ing

意味わざわざ〜する

  • Why would you want to go through the trouble of making us human again?
  • She went through the trouble of printing them all.

💡 手間のかかることを、あえてやる形です。bother to ~ が面倒の有無なのに対し、go through the trouble は手間を通り抜ける——量の多さが出るのが違い。of のあとは ~ing。ありがたく思うときにも、呆れるときにも使えます。

try one's hardest

意味精一杯やる

  • That even though things have been miserable, you're still trying your hardest.
  • He tried his hardest to finish before dark.

💡 自分の中でいちばん強く努める形です。do one's best とほぼ同じですが、try one's hardest は最中の粘りが出ます——結果より過程を見ているのが違い。hardest は副詞 hard の最上級。人を励ますときによく使います。

play dead

意味死んだふりをする

  • Me? Nah, just playing dead.
  • The beetle plays dead when you touch it.

💡 動かずに、倒れたふりをする形です。hide が隠れるのに対し、play dead は見せる演技——相手に見られているのが違い。play が「〜を演じる」。play dumb(知らないふり)と同じ作りで覚えられます。

work out in the end

意味最後にはうまく収まる

  • I know this will work out in the end because I believe in you.
  • It worked out in the end, somehow.

💡 途中はどうあれ、終わりには収まる形です。succeed が成功なのに対し、work out は落ち着き先——過程の乱れを含むのが違い。in the end が「最後には」。人を安心させる一言として便利です。

cheer ~ on

意味声をかけて応援する

  • No knight would simply hide behind his master, cheering her on.
  • We stood at the corner cheering them on.

💡 声を出して、相手を押す形です。support が支えなのに対し、cheer ~ on は声の応援——その場にいるのが違い。on が「続けさせる」。人の名前は cheer と on の間に置きます。

kick in

意味効きはじめる

  • To make his invincibility kick in, he has to stop his own heart first.
  • The discount kicks in after the third booking.

💡 仕掛けや効き目が、働き出す形です。start が開始なのに対し、kick in は作用の発動——いきなり効くのが違い。薬・暖房・割引・規則と組むのが定番で、主語は人ではありません。

第62話の実際のセリフから、中級で押さえたい文法を3つ。

PATTERN 1

It makes sense that ~(〜なのは道理だ)

It makes sense that a knight should do the fighting.

筋が通っている、と受け入れる形です。I agree が同意なのに対し、It makes sense that ~ は理屈の確認——なぜそうなるかを見ているのが違い。make sense が「意味が通る」。That makes sense. だけでも「なるほど」として使えます。会議で相手の案を受けるときに便利です。

PATTERN 2

just so I'm clear, …(確認させてほしいのですが)

So, hang on, just so I'm clear, you're sayin' it's not fair?

話を止めて、理解を合わせる形です。Do you mean ~? が質問なのに対し、just so I'm clear は前置き——責めていないと示すのが違い。so (that) I'm clear が「はっきり分かるように」。そのあとに相手の話を言い直すのが型で、打ち合わせでいちばん出番が多い言い方です。

Will you trust me to + 動詞の原形?(任せてくれる?)

Will you trust me to take care of everything?

信じて預けてほしい、と頼む形です。Can I do it? が許可なのに対し、Will you trust me to ~? は信頼の依頼——相手の気持ちを訊いているのが違い。trust A to do で「AがやるのをBが信じる」。仕事を引き取るときの切り出しに向きます。

⭐ 歩み寄ろうとするエミリアが、自分を名乗るときに添えた一言です。違うところはあっても、重なっている点がある——という形です。be the same が「同じ」と、丸ごと一致を言うのに対し、have things in common は部分の一致——違いを認めたうえで言っているところが違います。common は「共通の」。二人のあいだに置いてある持ちものという絵です。だから主語は必ず両方——We have ~ in common の形か、I have ~ in common with you の形にします。量は a lot / nothing / more than ~ で言い分けられて、We have a lot in common. なら「気が合う」に近くなります。使いどころは、初対面と仲直り。違いを先に認めてから共通点を出すと、相手が構えを下ろしやすくなります。紛らわしいのがin common with ~(〜と同様に)という副詞句。In common with many firms, we closed. なら「多くの会社と同様に」——have が付けば共通点、付かなければ「同様に」 と見分けます。
