🎯 Grammar Patterns
3 patterns
第65話の実際のセリフから、書き言葉でも通用する上級構文を3つ。
PATTERN 1
It's extremely rude of you to + 動詞の原形(〜するとは無作法だ)
It's extremely rude of you to begin eating before everyone's at the table.
皆が席に着く前に食べはじめるとは、たいそう無作法ですこと。
行いを名指しして、礼を欠くと言う形です。Don't do that. が禁止なのに対し、It's rude of you to ~ は評価——作法の物差しを当てているのが違い。of you が「あなたの行いとして」——for you ではありません。kind / brave / careless に替えれば褒めるほうにも使えます。
他にも使える例:
- It was kind of you to wait.(お待ちくださって、ご親切に)
- It's careless of him to send it twice.(二度送るとは不注意です)
PATTERN 2
It's not as if ~(〜というわけでもあるまいし)
It's not as if I'm actually friends with you guys.
別に、あんたたちと友達というわけでもあるまいし。
そんな前提は無い、と自分で先に言う形です。I'm not ~ が単なる否定なのに対し、It's not as if ~ は仮定の打ち消し——相手が思っていそうなことを先回りして消すのが違い。as if のあとは現在形でも仮定法でも可。強がりにも、謙遜にも聞こえるので、語調に気をつけて使います。
他にも使える例:
- It's not as if we had a choice.(選べる立場でもなかったのですから)
- It's not as if I asked for special treatment.(特別扱いを求めたわけでもありません)
PATTERN 3
just how many ~?(いったいいくつ〜なのか)
Just how many are you carrying inside you, I suppose?
いったい、いくつ抱えているのかしら。
数の多さに呆れて、問いで押す形です。How many ~? が普通の質問なのに対し、just how many ~? は強調——答えを求めていないことが多いのが違い。just が疑問詞の前に入って、「いったい」を作ります。just how long / how far も同じ作り。
他にも使える例:
- Just how long has this been going on?(いったい、いつからこうなのですか)
- Just how many versions are there?(いったい何版あるのですか)
🎯 Today's Phrase
Native daily-use phrase
★ TODAY'S PHRASE
get under one's skin
「神経に障る」
- Don't let her get under your skin!
- That one comment got under my skin all week.
- He knows exactly how to get under my skin.
⭐ 挑発に乗りかけた仲間へ、アルが投げた一言です。相手の言葉が内側まで入り込んで、いつまでも苛立たせる——という形です。annoy が「迷惑をかける」と、その場の話なのに対し、get under one's skin は入り込んで残る——あとから思い出してまた腹が立つところが違います。絵は言葉どおり、皮膚の下に入る。取り出せないから、ずっと残るわけです。だから主語は、刺さった側ではなく刺した側——His tone got under my skin. のように置きます。いちばん出番が多いのは、否定の助言——Don't let it get under your skin. で「真に受けるな・ペースに乗るな」。もう一つ、まるで逆の意味もあります。古い歌の題にもある使い方で、「すっかり心に入り込んでいる」——好きで頭から離れないほう。どちらかは文脈で決まります。紛らわしいのがrub someone the wrong way(癪に障る)。こちらは第一印象から合わないこと——後を引くなら get under one's skin、はじめから合わないなら rub the wrong way と分けると混ざりません。

5.0 / 5
第65話は「醜悪なる晩餐会」。四つの戦いが並行しますが、通っている題は一つ——食卓の作法です。最後に来た者が「皆が席に着く前に食べるな」と叱る、という筋になっています。上級版はその作法と順番の英語に絞りました。
