01
come back empty-handed
- Hey, don't just think we came back empty-handed.
- We didn't come back empty-handed — we got the dates.
02
place the blame squarely on ~
- Could you not say it in a way that places the blame squarely on me?
- The report places the blame squarely on the schedule.
- Look, all I'm saying is, we shouldn't rush to a decision on this.
- Let's not rush to a decision before Friday.
- And Liliana never ever goes back on her word!
- They went back on their word about the deadline.
change one's mind が心変わりなのに対し、go back on one's word は約束違反——相手との取り決めがあったのが違い。go back on ~ が「〜をほごにする」。
- What those others were thinking doesn't interest me in the slightest.
- It doesn't bother me in the slightest.
not at all が一般的なのに対し、in the slightest は硬め——改まった文に載るのが違い。 not in the least
- The fact that you're going to cause trouble for me is kind of a given.
- Overtime in December is a given.
take ~ as a given
- Aw, man, you really know how to play dirty, don't you?
- They played dirty in the last round of talks.

- I must give you one warning. You have to beware of Gluttony.
- Beware of the step by the door.
- So, I believe we ought to rejoice in that.
- Let's rejoice in what did get finished.

🎯 Grammar Patterns
3 patterns
PATTERN 1
Do you honestly feel like you're in a position to ~?(〜できる立場だと思うのか)
Do you honestly feel like you're in a position to snap at her right now?
You shouldn't ~ が助言なのに対し、in a position to ~ は立場の話——できるかどうかではないのが違い。be in a position to ~ は「〜できる立場にある」という便利な型で、肯定でも丁寧に使えます——I'm not in a position to comment.(お答えできる立場にありません)。
- I'm not in a position to approve that.(それを承認できる立場にありません)
- Are we in a position to promise a date?(日付を約束できる立場でしょうか)
PATTERN 2
It's a waste of time to + 動詞の原形(〜するだけ無駄だ)
It's a waste of time to expect repentance or empathy from that person.
It's a waste of time to ~ は判断——理由として置けるのが違い。It is + 名詞 + to do の型で、a waste of money / effort にも替えられます。 (Expecting ~ is a waste of time.)
- It's a waste of time to argue about the title.(題名を言い争うだけ無駄です)
- It's a waste of money to reprint it.(刷り直すのは金の無駄です)
PATTERN 3
out of respect for ~, …(〜に免じて)
Fine, out of respect for the songstress, I'll entrust you with my compassion.
because I like you が好意なのに対し、out of respect for ~ は敬意が理由——譲る筋を明かしているのが違い。out of ~ が「〜という動機から」——out of kindness / curiosity / habit も同じ作り。
- Out of respect for the family, we won't publish the name.(ご遺族に免じて、氏名は伏せます)
- He kept quiet out of respect for his teacher.(恩師に敬意を払って、彼は黙っていました)
🎯 Today's Phrase
Native daily-use phrase
★ TODAY'S PHRASE
come back empty-handed
- Hey, don't just think we came back empty-handed.
- We didn't come back empty-handed — we got the dates.
- Three shops, and I came back empty-handed.
We didn't come back empty-handed.
