🎯 Grammar Patterns
3 patterns
第67話の実際のセリフから、書き言葉でも通用する上級構文を3つ。
PATTERN 1
Taking ~ out of the equation, …(〜を抜きにすれば)
Taking feelings out of the equation, it doesn't matter who does it.
気持ちを抜きにすれば、誰がやるかは関係ない。
ある要素を外して、話を単純にする形です。Apart from ~ が除外なのに対し、take ~ out of the equation は計算から外す——いったん脇に置くだけなのが違い。equation が「方程式」。そのあとで put it back と戻せるのが、この言い方の便利なところです。費用・感情・時間を外して考えるときに使えます。
他にも使える例:
- Taking cost out of the equation, which would you pick?(費用を抜きにすれば、どちらを選びますか)
- That takes luck out of the equation.(それで運の要素が外れます)
PATTERN 2
If anything, …(どちらかといえば、むしろ)
If anything, it's more like you've always been three lengths ahead.
むしろ、きみのほうがずっと三馬身先を行っている。
相手の見立てを、逆の方へ押し返す形です。No, that's wrong. が否定なのに対し、If anything, … は方向の訂正——やわらかく逆を言うのが違い。直前の否定を受けて使うのが型で、「そんなことはない。むしろ〜」という流れ。謙遜を打ち消すときにちょうどよい言い方です。
他にも使える例:
- It wasn't a burden. If anything, it helped.(負担ではありません。むしろ助かりました)
- If anything, the second draft is shorter.(どちらかといえば、二稿のほうが短いです)
PATTERN 3
I don't think anyone would blame you if ~(〜しても誰も責めはしない)
I don't think anyone would blame you if you used your position to make that her.
その立場を使って彼女を先にしても、誰も責めはしないと思う。
後ろめたさを、先に外してやる形です。You should ~ が助言なのに対し、no one would blame you は許し——決めるのは相手なのが違い。would が仮定法で、まだしていないことを指します。断りづらい人の背中を押すときに効きます。
他にも使える例:
- No one would blame you if you left early today.(今日は早く帰っても誰も責めません)
- I don't think anyone would blame you if you said no.(断っても、誰も責めないと思います)
🎯 Today's Phrase
Native daily-use phrase
★ TODAY'S PHRASE
be at a loss as to ~
「〜をどうすべきか途方に暮れている」
- So I'm at a loss as to what to do right now myself.
- We're at a loss as to how they got the file.
- I was at a loss as to where to begin.
⭐ 事情を打ち明けたエキドナが、自分の状態をそのまま言った一言です。どうすればよいのか、見当がつかない——という形です。be confused が「混乱している」と、頭の中の状態を言うのに対し、be at a loss は手がかりが無い——ちゃんと考えた末にそこへ来ているところが違います。loss は「失われた状態」。道しるべを失って立っているという絵です。as to ~ のあとは疑問詞の節——what to do / how to start / whether to ask。as to を省いて at a loss だけでも通じます。使いどころは、相談の切り出し。「困っています」より落ち着いて聞こえるので、仕事の相談文に向きます。よく似た形が一つ——at a loss for words は「言葉に詰まる」で、驚きや感激で口が利けないときにも使います。紛らわしいのがat a loss(商売で「赤字で」)。sell at a loss なら「原価割れで売る」——人が主語なら途方に暮れる、商売の話なら赤字 と分けると混ざりません。
