🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

第69話の実際のセリフから、書き言葉でも通用する上級構文を3つ。

PATTERN 1

The only thing we can do is ~(できるのは〜だけだ)

The only thing we can really do is to stay as far away as possible.

選択肢を一つに絞って示す形です。We should ~ が助言なのに対し、The only thing we can do is ~ は限定——ほかに手が無いのが違い。後ろの to は省ける——is stay でも is to stay でも通じます。The only thing you need is ~ と、主語を替えて応用できます。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 2

be prepared to + 原形(〜する覚悟をしておく)

That means we need to be prepared to take risks at some point.

そうなってもいいように、腹を決めておく形です。be ready to ~ が準備完了なのに対し、be prepared to ~ は覚悟——望ましくないことが後ろに来るのが違い。be ready なら「すぐ行ける」、be prepared なら「そのときは受け入れる」。交渉や計画の話でよく使われます。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 3

見方を変えても結論は同じ、と念を押す形です。Clearly, … が断定なのに対し、No matter how you look at it, … は総当たり——反論の余地を先に潰すのが違い。how you look at it が「見方」。文頭に置いて、後ろに普通の文を続けます。厳しい結論を伝えるときの前置きに向きます。

他にも使える例:

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

read the room

He's not great at reading the room.(あの人は空気を読むのが得意ではない)——三人称にすると角が取れます。否定形の couldn't read the room は「場違いなことをしてしまった」という反省にも使えます。紛らわしいのがread between the lines(行間を読む)。room は場の空気、lines は言外の意味 と分けると混ざりません。

作品レビュー

編集部が実際に観て厳選した、第69話の見どころと英語学習ポイント〈上級版〉。

★★★★★ 5.0 / 5

第69話は「監視塔の番人」。地下に落ちた三人と一頭が、出口も地図もないまま歩く回です。上級版はその説明と助言に絞りました。

見出しはread the room / push someone's buttons / eat away at ~ / be beside oneself / state the obvious のように、人の機嫌を読む言い回しを中心に据えました。語彙は plummeting / tainted / behavioral / theorizing / nullification のような推理と説明の語で揃えています。

この回でとくに効くのは、結論を絞る英語です。The only thing we can do is ~(できるのは〜だけだ)、be prepared to + 原形(〜する覚悟をしておく)、No matter how you look at it, …(どう見ても〜だ)——一つに絞る・腹を決める・念を押す型が並んでいます。be ready と be prepared の差が、この回の勘どころです。

総合難易度:★★★★★(説明と助言の英語が中心)/英語学習価値:★★★★★(会議でそのまま使える形が揃っています)/おすすめ度:★★★★★。come undone / blow it / In case you haven't noticed, ~ まで扱う、リゼロ第69話の上級版です。
