💡 足元の危なさを、短く知らせる形です。Be careful. が全般の注意なのに対し、watch your step は足元限定——どこが危ないか分かるのが違い。watch が「見ておく」。比喩で「言動に気をつけろ」という警告にもなります。

意味ここで道が分かれている

  • The path splits here.
  • The trail splits here — left goes to the lake.

💡 一本道が、二手に分かれる形です。turn が曲がり角なのに対し、split は分岐——どちらも道として続くのが違い。split が「割れる」。比喩で「意見が割れる」にも同じ動詞を使います。

keep up this pace

意味この調子を保つ

  • If we can keep up this pace, then we might reach our goal faster.
  • If we keep up this pace, we'll finish by noon.

💡 いまの速さを、落とさずに続ける形です。go fast が速度なのに対し、keep up は維持——すでに出ている調子が前提なのが違い。keep up with ~ なら「〜についていく」で、相手がいる形。

意味気楽な散歩

  • You think it's a fun stroll through the park?
  • The exam was no stroll through the park.

💡 楽なものではない、と皮肉る形です。easy が形容なのに対し、a stroll through the park はたとえ——絵が浮かぶのが違い。否定や反語で使うのが定番で、a walk in the park もまったく同じ意味です。

leave ~ as bait

意味〜をおとりに置いていく

  • If something happens, we're leaving you as bait, OK?
  • They left the old sign as bait for tourists.

💡 誘い寄せる役として、置いていく形です。leave ~ behind が置き去りなのに対し、as bait は役目つき——使う目的があるのが違い。bait が「えさ」。冗談めかした脅しとしてよく使われます。

意味たった一人で

  • I'm not gutsy enough to go looking around here all on my lonesome.
  • She drove all the way there on her lonesome.

💡 ひとりきりで、と砕けて言う形です。alone が事実なのに対し、all on one's lonesome は語り口——心細さがにじむのが違い。by oneself のくだけた形で、話し言葉だけに使います。

bright eyed and bushy tailed

意味元気いっぱいで

  • Finally bright eyed and bushy tailed, are you?
  • She showed up bright eyed and bushy tailed at six.

💡 目が澄んで、尻尾がふさふさ——つまり元気という形です。energetic が形容なのに対し、bright eyed and bushy tailed は絵——りすのような元気さが違い。朝の挨拶がわりに使われることが多く、語順は入れ替えません。

意味〜を…に隠す

  • She's trying to be brave and hide it from you.
  • Don't hide the numbers from the team.

💡 相手の目に触れないようにする形です。keep a secret が秘密なのに対し、hide ~ from … は相手を名指し——誰から隠すか言うのが違い。from を落とさないこと。物にも気持ちにも使えます。

意味〜の姿が見当たらない

  • I don't see any sign of Ms. Emilia or Ms. Beatrice.
  • There was no sign of the package at the door.

💡 そこにいた形跡すら無いと言う形です。can't find ~ が捜索なのに対し、no sign of ~ は痕跡——手がかりが無いのが違い。sign が「しるし」。show no sign of ~ing なら「〜する気配がない」。

意味ほっと息をつく

  • I can let out a sigh of relief, finally.
  • We let out a sigh of relief when the light turned green.

💡 張りつめていた息を、ふっと吐く形です。be relieved が状態なのに対し、let out a sigh of relief は動作——体に出ているのが違い。breathe a sigh of relief も同じ意味で、どちらも新聞でよく見ます。

第69話の実際のセリフから、中級で押さえたい文法を3つ。

PATTERN 1

What makes you think ~?(どうして〜だと思うの)

I wondered what makes you think this is a door anyway?

判断の根拠をたずねる形です。Why do you think ~? が理由なのに対し、What makes you think ~? はきっかけ——何がそう思わせたのかを聞くのが違い。make が使役の「〜させる」——主語は「物・出来事」になります。言い方によっては疑いの色が出るので、口調をやわらかくすること。

PATTERN 2

There's no need to ~(〜する必要はありません)

There's no need to get so worked up, both of you.

相手の心配や手間を、先に外してやる形です。Don't ~ が禁止なのに対し、There's no need to ~ は不要の通知——やめろとは言っていないのが違い。need は名詞で、後ろは to + 原形。There's no need for ~ と名詞を続ける形もあります。

Don't be afraid to + 原形(遠慮なく〜して)

If you get cold, don't be afraid to say so.

ためらわなくていい、と背中を押す形です。Please ~ が依頼なのに対し、Don't be afraid to ~ は許可——相手が遠慮しているのが前提なのが違い。afraid は「怖い」だけでなく「気が引ける」。Don't hesitate to ~ は同じ意味のかたい形で、メールの締めによく使われます。

⭐ 地下道で、スバルが後ろの二人へ声をかけた一言です。足元の危なさを、短く知らせる——という形です。Be careful. が「気をつけて」と、全般の注意を言うのに対し、watch your step は足元限定——どこが危ないのか相手に分かるところが違います。この watch は「見る」ではなく「気をつけて見ておく」。watch your head(頭上注意)/ watch your hands(手元注意)と、体の部位を入れ替えて使えます。出番がいちばん多いのは、案内するとき——段差・濡れた床・暗い階段で、日本語の「足元にお気をつけください」にそのまま当たります。駅や店の掲示でもよく見かける言い方です。もう一つ、比喩の使い方があります。You'd better watch your step around him. なら「あの人の前では言動に気をつけたほうがいい」——こちらは足元ではなく振る舞いの話です。紛らわしいのがwatch out(危ない!)。watch your step は前もっての注意、watch out は差し迫った警告 と分けると混ざりません。
