💡 知り合ってから、ずいぶん経っている形です。know each other が面識なのに対し、go way back は年季——昔からだと強調するのが違い。way が「ずっと」という強め。人を紹介するときにそのまま使えます。

get hung up on ~

意味〜にこだわる

  • Why get so hung up on that?
  • Don't get hung up on the wording.

💡 小さな一点に、引っかかって離れない形です。care about ~ が関心なのに対し、get hung up on ~ は停滞——先へ進めていないのが違い。hang が「引っかける」。たいてい否定や忠告で使われます。

mess with ~

意味〜をいじる・ちょっかいを出す

  • And stop messing with her ponytail.
  • Who's been messing with my settings?

💡 触らなくていいものを、触る形です。touch が接触なのに対し、mess with ~ は迷惑——相手が嫌がっているのが違い。人が相手なら「からかう」。Don't mess with me. は「なめるなよ」という強い一言になります。

hitch a free ride

意味ただ乗りする

  • A kid hitching a free ride shouldn't be so demanding.
  • He hitched a free ride to the station.

💡 人の乗り物に、ただで乗せてもらう形です。get a ride が同乗なのに対し、hitch a free ride はただ乗り——払っていないのが違い。hitch が「引っかける」——hitchhike と同じ語です。比喩で「他人の努力に便乗する」にもなります。

smooth it out

意味揺れをならす・角を取る

  • Can you smooth it out?
  • Let's smooth out the wording before we send it.

💡 でこぼこを、平らにならす形です。fix が修理なのに対し、smooth ~ out は調整——壊れてはいないのが違い。布のしわ・道の揺れ・文章の角と、相手を選ばず使えます。

cling on to ~

意味〜にしがみつく

  • She went right over and started clinging on to you.
  • The kid clung on to his bag the whole way.

💡 離すまいと、強くつかまる形です。hold が保持なのに対し、cling on to ~ は必死さ——離れたくないのが違い。過去形は clung。希望や過去にしがみつく、という比喩でも使います。

let ~ down

意味〜をがっかりさせる

  • Please do try not to let us down.
  • I don't want to let the team down.

💡 期待に応えられず、相手を落胆させる形です。disappoint が同義ですが、let ~ down のほうが日常語——信頼が前提にあるのが違い。down が「下へ」——持ち上げていた手を放すという絵です。a letdown と名詞にもなります。

意味朝飯前

  • Aw, that was a piece of cake.
  • The test was a piece of cake.

💡 拍子抜けするほど、簡単だった形です。easy が形容なのに対し、a piece of cake はたとえ——軽く言っているのが違い。終わったあとに言うのが自然で、これからの話にはあまり使いません。

意味〜に委ねられている

  • Rem and Patrasche both are in your hands.
  • The decision is in your hands now.

💡 相手の裁量に、預けてある形です。depend on ~ が依存なのに対し、be in one's hands は委任——こちらは手を離したのが違い。託すときの決まり文句で、重さが伝わる言い方です。

watch over ~

意味〜を見守る

  • You staying by her side and watching over her means a lot.
  • Could you watch over the bags for a minute?

💡 そばにいて、様子を見ている形です。look at が視線なのに対し、watch over ~ は保護——守るために見ているのが違い。over が「上から覆う」。人にも荷物にも使えます。

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

第70話の実際のセリフから、中級で押さえたい文法を3つ。

PATTERN 1

Try not to + 原形(〜しないようにね)

Try not to get up to too much mischief now.

やんわり釘を刺す、やわらかい禁止の形です。Don't ~ が禁止なのに対し、Try not to ~ は努力目標——完全には無理でもいいという含みが違い。try のあとが not to + 原形。Try to not ~ の語順は不自然なので、not を先に置くこと。子どもや親しい相手に向く言い方です。

PATTERN 2

far more ~ than …(…よりずっと〜だ)

I'm far more freaked out than I am grateful at the moment.

二つを比べて、差の大きさを言う形です。more ~ than … が比較なのに対し、far more は強調——差が大きいと示すのが違い。far のほかに much / a lot も同じ働き。very more とは言えないので注意。同じ人の中の二つの気持ちを比べるこの使い方は、感想を言うときに便利です。

How can you ever + 原形?(どうして〜できるの)

How can you ever forget about your precious student?

信じられない、と驚きをぶつける形です。Why did you ~? が理由なのに対し、How can you ever ~? は非難まじりの驚き——答えを求めていないのが違い。ever が「そもそも」という強め。強い言い方なので、冗談か、よほど親しい相手にだけ。

⭐ 伝説の二人と昔なじみだ、とシャウラが言った一言です。知り合ってから、ずいぶん経っている——という形です。know each other が「知り合いだ」と、面識の有無を言うのに対し、go way back は年季——付き合いの長さそのものを言うところが違います。この way は「道」ではなく「ずっと」という強め。back が「昔へ」なので、ずっと昔まで遡るという絵になります。使いどころは、人を紹介するとき——Tom and I go way back. で「トムとは長い付き合いでね」。親しさを一言で伝えられるので、紹介の枕にちょうどよい形です。主語は必ず二人以上。I go way back. とは言えません——We go way back. / They go way back. の形で使います。年数を足したいときはWe go back twenty years. のようにway を数字に置き換えられます。紛らわしいのがgo back on ~(約束を破る)。way back は付き合いの長さ、back on は約束の反故 と分けると混ざりません。
