意味どこからともなく

  • Would a book with your name just suddenly appear out of thin air?
  • The rumor appeared out of thin air.

💡 何も無いところから、ふいに現れる形です。suddenly が速さなのに対し、out of thin air は出どころの無さ——元が説明できないのが違い。thin air が「薄い空気」。appear / conjure / pull と組んで、「無から出す」という言い方になります。

意味その件に口出しできない

  • Besides, I don't have any say in the matter.
  • The branch had no say in the matter.

意味〜に含まれる・〜の管轄になる

  • There are likely more rules that fall under rule two.
  • That request falls under a different department.

🎯 Grammar Patterns 3 patterns

第71話の実際のセリフから、書き言葉でも通用する上級構文を3つ。

PATTERN 1

One must ~ to …(…するには〜でなければならない)

One must be familiar with the author to read a book in here.

条件を、人を特定せずに述べる形です。You must ~ が相手への指示なのに対し、One must ~ は一般論——誰にでも当てはまるのが違い。one は「人というもの」を指す代名詞。受ける代名詞も one / one's で揃えます。規約や説明文の文体で、会話ではやや硬く響きます。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 2

Perhaps we're better off ~ing(〜したほうがよさそうだ)

Perhaps we're better off taking the next exam for entry into the second level.

比べたうえで、そちらを勧める形です。We should ~ が助言なのに対し、be better off ~ing は比較——もう一方より得だと言うのが違い。off のあとは必ず ~ing。Perhaps を付けると押しつけが消えるので、会議で案を出すときにちょうどよい形です。

他にも使える例:

PATTERN 3

Wouldn't that mean ~?(ということは〜ということでは)

Wouldn't that mean all of the books in this library are labeled with names?

相手の説から、次の結論を引き出す形です。So it means ~ が断定なのに対し、Wouldn't that mean ~? は確認——相手に判定を預けるのが違い。否定疑問なので、答えは Yes が肯定。議論の途中で筋を確かめるときに便利で、相手を否定せずに詰められます。

🎯 Today's Phrase Native daily-use phrase

★ TODAY'S PHRASE

pique one's interest

The opening line piqued my interest. で「書き出しに引き込まれた」。宣伝文句として、そのまま置ける形です。綴りに注意——peak(頂点)/ peek(のぞく)と同じ音なので、英語話者でもよく書き間違えます。興味の話なら pique と覚えておくこと。紛らわしいのがbe piqued(むっとしている)。他人の interest を pique すれば好意的、自分が piqued だと不機嫌 と分けると混ざりません。
